Our new puppy wolfs his food down like he is starving!
I feed him 3 times a day and the packet says 40 - 160g per day, I feed him 120g per day over the 3 feeds. He is 4kg......should I feed him more?
The breeder did say he was very greedy but I have never seen a dog eat like that before!

Angels. What is the breed as will help people advise you, as a chi food amount at that age is completely different to a st Bernard LOL

Oh if only my little lad had a fraction of your pups appetite, I would be over the moon. You can always cut back on a dogs food but you can't make them eat.. Lucky you, a lovely pudgy, puddingy pup...bliss.

I would just go by how he looks. You want to be able to feel a light covering over the ribs and then tucked in at the waist when you look at him from directly above (although I do think an extra bit of puppy fat at his age is ok :-D).
My Dobe has always cleared his bowl in one go from day 1 (he's nearly 4 now) and would eat as much as I gave him I think, but his weight is perfect as it is. It's great to have a healthy eater. It doesn't necessarily mean that he needs more (unless he looks on the thin side obviously!) just that he enjoys his food :-D
What is the weight range (of the dog) given for the 40-160g of food a day?
There isn't a weight range on the packet just an age range. He is a ckcs, he has lost weight since he has been here, as he was very podgy but he had dioarrhea (sp) for a few days. I just feel that he is still so hungry....he is so different to our other boy who has always left food.
My pup used to wolf his food down as well. When he was 12 weeks he was eating his meal in 48 sec's (we timed him) I mentioned it to the vet when he went for the last injection but the vet said it wasn't uncommon for puppies to do it and they grow out of it. Sure enough he did grow out of it and eats perfectly normally now. Not sure if it's to do with having competition from other littermates and not then not being used to having to fight over food when they get to their owners home???? As long as you pup is putting on weight appropriate to his age and breed then i wouldn't worry too much.

Think yourself lucky you don't have a picky CKCS! We get many posts on here from Cav owners who're at their wits' end with Cavs who refuse their food. In my experience (with other people's dogs, not just my own!) a dog who doesn't scoff his food is either bored sick of his food or simply sick and in need of a vet visit. It seems that a clean bowl in under a minute is the norm for fit, healthy dogs. So if I were you I wouldn't worry. :)
I am now giving him half a cupful 3 times a day and this suits him better although he is still greedy! :-)

my pup and 3 of my other dogs are really greedy but then they are bt's and thats a breed trait my pup gets fed 5-6 times a day and would still eat more if i let him
Hehe :-)
I am sure our new addition would eat ALL day long if he could put he is looking a bit more barrel ish now so I don't want to give him anymore! :-)
