Topic Dog Boards / General / Tips for Removing Pee Odour from Coat?
- By Cairnmania [gb] Date 24.01.08 10:17 UTC
Rudi is forever sticking his head in the shrubs in my garden on his hunting expeditions.  Right now he stinks to high heaven - a very pungent, foxy smell concentrated on his head and neck.  It hasn't rained in a while and either he's picking up the scent from where he's wee'd or where a fox has left its mark.

Last night I rubbed his coat with some moist "shampoo" cloths - which were useless - and then sprayed him with a doggee cologne.  He still stinks.

A soap & water bath is not the answer as five minutes later he'd stick his head in the shrubs and I'd be back to square one.

Does anyone have any quick & easy tips for odour removal?

If it is fox poo then tomato ketchup is supposed to work. I should think if it is pee then a bath is really the only option.

There are some odour neutralisers that can be used on animals as well as carpets and materila etc but can't remember which one as have had quite a few different ones over the last few months with my kitten weeing problem !

The only other thing is maybe hose down the shrubs to try and get rid of the smell ?

Just wondering but does tomato ketchup dye the coat of light coloured dogs?

With the tomato ketchup you're supposed to rub it in then immediately wash it out.  The OP would still have the problem of having to wash the dog several times a day by the sound of it.

The only thing I can think of is to  fence off that particular part of the garden.

Hi Cairnmania

you could try this product   I think also as someone else has suggested I'd try to somehow keep the "danger zone area" out of bounds!

Tomato juice is very good at removing smells (just the tinned stuff for drinking). It's never stained my sister's yellow lab and he's a very light cream.

Tomato juice stained our mostly white ESS pale pink.  Perhaps if we'd washed and washed her repeatedly with shampoo after the tomato juice we could have removed the pink but the poor dog had been scrubbed with, I think about 20 tins of tomato juice and rinsed, for so long we figured she'd had enough.  Another bath a week later removed most of the stain.

It's funny you have such a problem with fox poo.  We have foxes too but I have never heard anyone complain about their dog rolling in it.  But, as fox mating season, late Feb. and early March, is near and the air will be ripe with the odour of "vixen fixin' for some mixin'" (complements OH) which is faintly like skunk mixed with lemon, I wonder if your fox poo does actually smell like a fainter version of our skunks?

For skunk and other odour we really like Canadian Odor Control Deodorizing Shampoo.  I buy it locally but I think you can order, even in the U.K.  It's easy on the skin and gives a beautiful shiny coat, at least on the two dogs I've used it on, so we just use it all the time.  And it works way better than tomato juice.

P.S. Admin, hope it is OK to say the product name.   Please edit if not.

Not fox poo - fox (or dog) urine is the problem.  I just noticed that the scent is pretty overpowering in one area of my garden, so I will have to get out the hose.   Funnily enough, I never noticed the "lemon" undertone to "vixen for some mixen" -- I can't bear to smell it long enough to detect the subtle components :-)

Tomato juice sounds messy, although I know it is supposed to work.   I'll try the Bac to Nature, although I thought it took a few days at least to have any effect.

Being from California I'm very familiar with eau de skunk Jetstone. I find fox poo to be far less offensive and not as strong. It's a similar sort of smell though.
