i went to the vets yesterday and picked up some panacur liquid for when meg has her pups, i also asked for some for her, they however have changed how they advise, and have prescribed a milbemax tablet at 40 days for her, and that should be fine? ive never doen it like that though! my worry when searching what othjers have used i found this post:
'Collies (as so rightly pointed out by other Collie breeders can not take milbemax it is dangerous for them) but Milbemax suits most other breeds and is an excellant no nonsense wormer which best of all only needs to be given once every three months.'

meg is a collie and normally is wormed using drontal, but i was surprised to be sold a different kind, hence me looking it up before using it!

any ideas?

I'd stick to Panacur. Your vet might not have
taken Meg's breed into consideration when he prescribed Milbemax?

Don't give it to her!
The enclosed instruction leaflet will also state from the manufacturer that it should not be given to Collie breeds, if there is no leaflet as often when vet prescribed go on the Milbemax website. I'm sure Collie owners will soon be on to verify the dire effects they can have on Collies, I learnt that myself on here.

My girl has Milbemax with no side effects and I whole heartedly recommend it for other breeds it is wonderful, but not for Collies............ please don't give it to her.

Many vets do not read up on things, return it and explain that it is not for Collies and go onto Drontal or panacur for your breed. :-)

I have a collie breed and would not give milbemax wormer use drontal or panacur .
- By georgepig [gb] Date 23.01.08 11:55 UTC
OMG my vet did not tell me this and I didn't get an info sheet and gave Milbemax to my collie x.  She was fine but I use Drontal now and I can get it much cheaper off the internet than from the vets.
I suppose it is my fault for not checking but you would have thought the vets might have known something about it!!!
- By madogz77 Date 23.01.08 12:08 UTC
brilliant thanks guys, i wont be giving it to her, i will order some drontal instead, was me trying to save myself hassle of ordering online as i was at the vets already with the cat!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.01.08 12:19 UTC
I don't think drontal is licensed for pregnancy only Panacur.
- By Carrington Date 23.01.08 12:25 UTC
georgepig, not your fault at all, why should we have to check if medication vets give us is ok? They should know.

During my friends last litter her bitch had an ear infection her vet prescribed her an ear drop that could have brought on early whelping or caused her to loose the pups, luckily I checked it on the net for her, it is something I always do now with all medication.

It seems that many vets do not know many things with new medicines, inparticular to do with whilst a bitch is in whelp.

It is something I have learnt from this site and other dog breeders that we need to always check. :-)
- By georgepig [gb] Date 23.01.08 12:27 UTC
Yes I will be checking EVERYTHING now, well when either of them gets poorly again!
I'll let my friend who has a collie know to check her wormer is ok for her dog.

Make sure you return it to the vet for your money back and tell them what you have found out.

Took this from the Novartis Website :

Special Precautions and Warnings

Studies with milbemycin oxime indicate that the margin of safety in certain dogs of Collie or related breeds is less than in other breeds. In these dogs, the recommended dose should be strictly observed.

The tolerance of MILBEMAX in young puppies from these breeds has not been investigated.

During treatment with MILBEMAX, no other macrocyclic lactones should be administered.

It doesn't say not to use Milbemax but to ensure that the correct dosage is given.

If your collie has been  DNA tested normal for MDR1 then Milbemax is fine to give if however the test hasn't been performed then I would never use Milbemax as it is from the same family of drugs as ivermectin which has proved fatal in susceptable dogs.

Just read the leaflet on the Drontal tablets and it says:

Contra-indications, warnings etc.

Do not exceed recommended dose when treating pregnant bitches.  Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant bitches. Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds

Although I use Drontal, I worm my girls before mating and then not until the pups are wormed at 2 weeks old.  So far we've never had worms.

same here i do it before and later when pups are born
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 23.01.08 15:17 UTC
Yikes, surely any vet should know about collie intolerances! I used Panacur liquid on my girl and on the puppies when they were born, no problems so far!

I went to my vet with one of my girl when she was in whelp with a water infection they booked her in for the urine to be taken direct from the bladder while I waited as I didnt want to leave a pregnant bitch in the vets {{ they knew she was   5wks in whelp}}  she was fine , did the tests and gave me the medication I got back in the car then thought I should ask if that medication is ok with in whelp bitch so went back in , they checked and said it was ok but to be safe they changed it for a different antibiotic HA ..I think they didnt check only because I questoned them they did , we shouldnt have to prompt  but it is always safer to remind them.

my vet has changed to that mil stuf and I have always used Drontal, I have a collie but no-one said anything I am a believer is it isn't broken don't try and fix it.  In pregnancy of my lab we always used panacur.  I am seeing my vet tommorrow and will be giving him an ear bashing.
