What are St.Bernards like to live with, other than them being big and taking up a lot of room.

I wish my friend had a computer, then she could do this her self. :)

Slobbery! I read in Saturday's paper that the unofficial record for the distance travelled by shaken slobber is 20 feet! :-D

slobber and a unique smell :) Also you think of them as cumbersome but my friend has one and he clears 6 feet fences no trouble....usually crushing them flat in the process! :(

Having a Newfie, slobber generally isn't an issue for me but the St Bernards I have met have been way droolier than any Newfie I know and even I couldn't handle the amount of slobber the ones that I have seen produce

a few months a go i met a man while walking the dogs who also owned bernese, we chatted for a while about them and got onto the conversation of other breeds we liked, he said he once owned a St bernard his exact words were " never again that dog could spin a washing machine" well that made me laugh he said he used to leave the kitchen and when he went back in the dog had spun the machine into the middle of the room, i love big dogs :-D

In another life I use to drive a lady around for my job ..on seeing my friend walking his St Bernard I stoped the car to say hello and see Yogi the dog. I then drove on about 4 miles to pick up my lady, she went to get in the car ..and said sombody has spat on you car I got out to see Yogi's drool hanging off my door handle in buckets ..and I had driven about 4 miles and that had not droped off HONEST!!

The slobber I couldn't handle, Yuk! Yuk! but they are beautiful placid dogs, very good with other dogs, people everyone by the standards of the one I know.  The downside though is that they just don't live very long 6-9 years, I would just find that too sad.

Put a medium sized shetland pony in your living room.

Throw a bucket of egg whites around.

Brush said shetland pony all over the floor.

Try to get it into your kitchen, up the stairs etc..

Thats what living with a st bernard is like - not that i have one but my friend has one and brings it here occasionally - he is massive :D and very dribbly :blargh: and very hairy.

What are there good points, they must have some.?

It seems that most of us just can't get past the slobber! :-D

As I've already said, nature wise I think they are lovely dogs, a walking colleague of mine has had two consecutively from rescue, the first and this second are lovely dogs, can't fault them character wise, the grooming, shedding, slobber, horse size poo's and short lifespan, all need to be taken into consideration but if your friend is ok with that then she would have a lovely dog. :-)

Yes the plus points are the are very good natured dogs but the slobber and the unique smell (as Sam put it :-D) is somewhat to be desired

Ha ha....I don't mind it either Mackleback!!! We don't have alot of choice with our breed!!!:-D

Is money not an issue aswell. To produce "horse sized poo" as it was so lovingly put, must mean feeding huge amounts of food. Whatever you feed, large quantities aren't cheap!!!

Start with the positives - Saints are such a lovely breed, very loving and are very much family dogs, and love to be at the heart of everything, only downside of the breed in my opinion is the amount of hair they shed (Even the smooths) and the constant supply of dribble. They don't eat or poo as much as you might think. If you have a large house with a good size garden they do very well.

I forgot to mention the lifespan - I lost one at 6 years old last year, she was my best friend in the world. Some do get to 8years plus but is not so common!!

Thanks :-)  My girl is Lola, she's almost 3 and is an utter nutcase....she definitely lacks the 'chilled out' gene that most Newfies seem to have.  But then, I'm told it's my own fault for having a brown instead of a nice sensible black ;-)

The black lump is Shay, Chow X Rottie, who will be 4 next month.  He's a bit of an oddball but we love him all the more for it.

we have special slobber towels for the bullies, though our old mastiff was worse

I can top that ,my newfs have there own bibs!!!!

Dont be fooled by the hipe blacks are just as bad.
I was told girls are better to train and im gald to be told thats not the case i thougt it was just me nice to know there are other mad newfs out there.

also your friend would never have to carry the shopping in ever again! so loads better that a partner as it cant answer back
