Hi
I am wanting to get my DDB's hip scored, but i am scared as i have heard of dogs having adverse affects to the anesthetic, could they be sedated instead???  my bitch has just turned 3 and my dog is 2 in march. I want to get them done for the good of the breed and i intend breed ruby in the future.

Any advice welcome

Thanks Louise

Yes, when I got my bitch hip scored she was sedated.  Near Blackpool though, bit too far North for you!

Whoops, just looked at your profile, probably not too far North!  PM me if you want the details.

There's a vet and top breeder of Weimeraner's who is in Leeds, I think, so much closer for you that does hipscoring under sedation.  Have you asked your breed club which they feel is better for the breed?  Sedation as does GA can have problems at times, but in reality they are that rare that it isn't the worry that it used to be years ago.

Maybe im just being abit of a worrier, but the thought of losing one under something like this brings tears to me eyes, i have lost a pup close to me recently and couldn't bare to lose another. Im training to be a vet nurse so they might let me accompany her. I will ask my local vets about sedation and if none agree to the idea i will try the ones suggested further a field. How long do they take to come through after they have been done? Do we get to see the x-rays, because i read an article on vets not aligning the dogs hips correctly and the scores inaccurate of course.

Rambling abit now but my dogs are my first concern, and i do worry.

Thanks Louise

Takes around 6-8 weeks, can be sooner at times.  Now my vet shows me the x-rays before they are sent off and we talk about them etc.  He also allows me to have a copy of one of them.

If you are training to be a vet nurse, discuss among your tutors about a vet they could recommend - anasthetics are very safe these days and I'm sure for x-rays they are only under for a very short while and only then lightly.  Your own vet may well have experience of taking the x-rays - my vet has done mine and several others and I have been very pleased with scores and the way they were treated in the surgery.  It is always a worry - regardless of what way you go and even more so worrying waiting for results to come through!  Good Luck.

I had the same worries about putting mine under a general anaesthetic for hip and elbow scoring so took my Rottie to Hampshire to have his done under sedation.  Everything went according to plan...although it took a long time for the sedation to work on him!!  Just waiting for the scores now...fingers crossed!
