Topic Other Boards / Foo / Trojan .Win32.StarField.......HELP
- By freespirit10 Date 18.12.07 11:44 UTC
Hi

yesterday my computer came up with a box saying that it had been infected with Trojan.win32.starfield.
I supposedly had norton on here from bt BUT it appears to have disappeared. Have tried to download it again but it comes up and says it cannot download Norton antivirus and firewall unless I can delete what is already on the computer.
Have looked in control panel, add and remove progs, in all my files, desktop etc etc and can't find it, not even in BT components!!! So asked computer to search for noton. it came up with 30 files BUT if you open them they are either empty or not available!!!
Everytime I move from page to page I get the box saying that trojan is on here.
I have read on the help section to turn off system recovery as trojan will hide in there and that no virus etc protection can get in and clean that file and that then when trojan is clear from the rest of the computer it pops out of the system restore files and reinfects. Not sure on this one but it is off at the moment, which worries me.

Anyone know what to do now. Have tried to download other virus and spyware programmes but they too all say before installing you need to uninstall norton. I would if I could find the bloody thing!

Any tech people on here pls

Sounds nasty - have you checked if Microsoft have a removal tool?

We had a win.32 trojan a few years back and despite numerous attempts at locating and removing it we had to wipe the hard drive entirely   It killed our laptops system restore function so yes, I'd turn that off before running any removal tools.  Be wary of using ones found randomly on the web as some are rogue programs and actually infect your pc rather than fix it :(

So you can't see the Norton Protection Centre icon ? Looks like a yellow clock with a green or red tick at the bottom ?

If not have you gone to your All programs option to see if Norton Internet Security is an option ?

If both of those draw a blank then i think you have a problem :(

Hi

Nope nothing except the files picked up on the search facility. have deleted some of them but the others it won't allow.
have just tried to download norton again and it says that it is unable to cos it is already on the computer.

Does anyone know whether if i start to remove pics of dogs etc on to disk or send them to a friend will the virus go with them???

I really think it might be easier to put the mouse through the screen:mad:

in the trojan box that appears it says click here to download a tool to erase it but it just brings up a blank screen

Save the pictures on disc then I think you will have to do a factory reinstall :(

That in itself could be a rogue program :(

I think I'd agree with lucy - save anything of value to disc and set pc back to factory settings.  Before passing on the disc or re-installing scan with  Norton  (which should be reinstalled again).  Remember BEFORE using the pc in any way to get all of the windows and norton updates - which may take some time!

Try downloading Spyware Terminator http://www.filehippo.com/download_spyware_terminator/

AVG anti-virus free edition is really good too and found the trojans on my computer. :-)

Yes Teri is right. This program trys to get you to download another fake program which adds more trouble.
Was the BT a trial only version?
Norton by the sounds of it is picking up stuff within your reg. I've had this before but of the top of my head I can't remember how my brother did it but I have a feeling he went and cleared up my reg and removed all norton stuff from my drive.
Norton can be a pain at times

The Bt version is what they give you free with your internet package. Have always used it and never had a prob;em. Until now!!!
Have tried Windows Scan Clean last night and it picked up the trojan BUT it cannot get rid of it.

Other than the window that keeps popping up asking me to download a programme to remove the trojan computer seems to be running fine.

I will try to find the registary and have a look. if I can get norton back on here it would help whilst I download my things off, there is alot of stuff on here along with hundreds of pictures of the dogs.

Please be careful with your reg. If you are not sure then it would be best to leave as you can create more problems.
That window that pops up is the trojan at work.
I also think that you may still have norton in your common files.

I did a google search to see if there were any links and I did find a few but norton can be a pain to remove and install.
Is there anyone local you know and trust who could look at it. I say trust as you may have info on your hard drive which you might like to keep private.

Under start you will see the run command button. Press this and a box opens. Now I strongly recommend you don't do this if your not sure!!
There are 2 commands.

msconfig which you can see what apps are running and various other options

regedit which allows you to alter keys or delete keys from your reg

Be warned that if you don't know what you are doing you can cause a crash and you may well end up formatting and reinstalling windows and unless you do backups everything will be lost.

Will get a friend to look at it at christmas who does know what he is doing.

In the meantime I will just download my things to disc

I have found that this link works on most computers, and will destroy most trojans.

Save it on your desktop and run it frequently.
