Topic Dog Boards / General / Akita kennel club stance on the two versions

Firstly, I don't have an Akita, neither do I intend to have one. However I was doing some general dog reading the other day and was quite amazed to discover this 'split' in the types of Akita, ie the American Akita and the Japanese Akita, which resembles a large Shiba Inu. From what I understand the AKC and the FIC have now classified them separately as the American and Japanese Akita. Just out of curiosity, how does this stand with our Kennel Club?

As far as I know we now have the Akita and the Japanese Akita Inu.

The Akita was split here by type (from vague recollection) around 2 years ago :)

AKITA and JAPANESE AKITA INU with the former being the one more regularly associated with top winning dogs here and in the US :)

Yes the breed was split on the 1st Jan last year.  I have an Akita that I show and think it is a good thing that the breeds have been split as they are very different to each other.

Thankyou. I was really astounded at just how different they are.

I love both the Akita and the Akita Inu. But I tend to have a soft spot for the Akita Inu a tad more, but then I like Shiba Inu too. A woman near where I grew up bred and showed Shiba Inu, gorgeous little things! :-D
