I have had an email from a woman wanting to use one of my boys. now we are a very small numerically breed so everyone knows everyone.......this woman is an unknown, has a very badly bred bitch and having seen others from the line they barely resemble the breed, no BVA elbow scores, :( and she is unemployed single mum with 3 tiny kids........living in the town, none of which are even suitable circumstances to own my breed IMO!!! but thats another matter!! anyway i have done the polite replies about how i have nothing compatable with her bitches breeding LOL :) and now am geting fed up of her constant emails telling me about how "all her friends want one of the pups" blah blah. without being blatantly rude and telling her some home truths about what i think about her and people like her......(thats the next option!) has anyone dealt with these types successfully and have any tips?

Hi Sam,

I would politely but firmly reiterate that you have no stud dog suitable to compliment her bitch and add that you only ever accept stud bookings on the basis that you feel strongly the mating will work since otherwise the resulting progeny would reflect poorly on your male(s).  I'd be inclined to advise at the same time that protracted correspondence was not likely to change your mind and that as far as you are concerned the subject is closed.

regards, Teri :)

Could you not say that you only permit bitches with all the relevant health checks to your boys. You are concerned that any lameness or health issues could be reflected on your boys and so say I am sorry but can't help you.

To be honest, in a breed such as yours where there aren't going to be another 10 people in your town who will let her use their dogs, I might be inclined to go for the (very politely put) home truths.

Confirm that you only accept bitches with the appropriate health tests, and that homes for your breed are very few and far between - you don't feel morally able to contribute to a litter which you wouldn't be happy to help sell as you couldn't recommend the puppies due to lack of health testing. Ask her if she is aware of the size of litter she may have, and that if she does find someone to let her use a dog, even well bred litters often end up with a substantial number of puppies still with the breeder at several months old - she is likely to struggle even more.

You're obviously more likely to convert her and help your breed by making a friend of her, so I'd just make sure it's carefully worded. You could always post a response on here (or PM to a few people), just to make sure it reads kindly.

I'm with Teri on this one!  Be polite (don't want any hassle) and say your boy would not complement her bitch.  I've also used the excuse with a couple of people wanting to use my SBT male that having 2 entire males so close together in the pack I wouldn't want temperaments to change.

I'd put her onto the stud dog article on the kennel club site with mike Stockman's comments.

You could also state you don''t accept bitches that are not hip scored etc, and that the bitches bloodlines are not acceptable to you, simple as.

I think the leading her to realise it's a bad idea method would be best for the breed as she just might find any old dog to use..

If it was me I'd say my dog was at stud to approved bitches only- and that means all health tests done, being from suitable lines AND having proved herself in the show ring, as otherwise it might reflect badly on the dog -everyone knows that whenever bad pups are produced the dog gets the blame.

Hi Sam,

I had a stud dog and used to get numerous calls got really fed up with pet people just wanting one litter before they spayed their pet bitch!!!!!!!!

The first things I used to say is - "I will need to have copies of your bitch's KC registered, up to date with health checks." If that doesn't put them of them ask and "how well is she doing in the show ring?" and finally tell them " before mating they will need to sign a contract that all puppies will be KC registered, they will have health checks and all KC register will be endorsed."

That normally works for me :-).

You are doing the right thing,
Chrisy.

well finally got rid of her!!! I asked her which of my boys she was thinking of and 1st she picked Fergus because she saw on my web site he was "top sire for 3 years running" and she assumed that just meant he enjoyes mating bitches!!! :)
I pointed out hes red and so is her bitch and that cannot be done! So then she said Basnicky because hes a lovely colour and I pointed out hes 4 months old! Finally she said Generous and so at that point I asked her for her BVA/KC elbow score and details of CCs won and working trials shes competed at......silence.....never heard another word!!! :)
Honestly I despair...I expect shell be in contact with the puppyfarmer hers came from and mate it back to its father or something!!! :(

Can two reds really not be bred or was tht a white lie :)

Not being funny here or sarcastic . But do you not think that if maybe you asked to see her bitch , to see if she was a good breed type and tell her that it is better to see bitches in the flesh than on paper , got her to see you with her bitch and then tell her about the test and screening that may need to be done (and while she was there show her what the breed standard desired are ) and maybe educate her so she would not go back to the puppy farmer . And if they were hell bent on breeding,, point them in the right direction of health tested parents and showing/working... Just a thought not knocking you. I know you must get tired of crappy stud requests , but if the prospective breeder(you know what i mean here i hope ) gets terrible knock backs then they do just get pushed back to the bad breeders and then the circle begins again.
This is not directed at you personally but in general.

i think thats sensible, it could be that she simply doesn't know any better and could use the advise

That's interesting, Sam.  What are the reasonings with the Braccos?

For some years it was considered 'wrong' to mate two liver flatcoats together - mainly because, I think, there were a lot of wishy washy livers at the time, and the dark liver colour wasn't fixed.

Nowadays, some folk who know and understand the genetics, and have good dark liver dogs , will mate two dark coloured livers together if that mating is the first choice - other parameters being priority.   After all, are not Irish Water Spaniels all bb?

I do feel that there are other loci involved ; not only the usual bb.
