Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Puppy Eukanuba

I've got 5 week puppies I'm weaning, and my friend suggested Puppy Eukanuba to wean them onto. I feed my adults James Wellbeloved but (a) she says some puppies don't like the puppy JWB, and (b) one of them is going to America where you can't get JWB anyway. But tonight at dog training one of the trainers said Eukanuba isn't a good quality food and can cause problems later in life - apparently lots of obedience people won't go anywhere near it. Any opinions people? Is it ok or should I find something else, in which case what's good quality and available in America?

I have weaned my last two litters on JW and they all loved it. Never had a problem with it. However, I too have heard things about Eukanuba, don't know what the problems are supposed to be as, as I feed JW all the time to my adults and I am so happy with their conditions that I just never have thought to change.

Lucydogs,

Why don't you ask whoever is buying the puppy in America what food they feed their dogs - assuming they have other dogs?  Or if they have had dogs in the past, what food they would recommend?   If it's a packaged food they may be able to ship some over here so a couple of weeks before the puppy is due to be transported you can gradually put it on its new menu.  Or, try to match the ingredient list in the U.S. food with one available here.

On Eukanuba - I have never heard a good thing about it, but it has been around for many years so I assume lots of people use it and are happy with it.  It is available in the U.S. - but you cannot assume it is exactly the same food.  Unless the Eukanuba we can buy here is imported from the U.S. the ingredients sold in the U.S. may be slightly different and will be sourced from different suppliers.

They feed Eukanuba & Purina Select, I'll try to pick up some Purina too. So far chunks of chicken are still the fave!

My bitch was weaned onto Iams (same company as Euk) as a pup by her breeder, and has been fed it since. She has just had her first litter, and they too have been weaned onto Iams. They are thriving.

My vet sell James Wellbeloved, but when we took our girl for her vaccs as a pup, he asked what we were feeding, and when we told him Iams, he told us to stick with it.

Whatever people say about it, our girl does extremely well on it, and everyone comments  on how brilliant she looks.

We've ended up with a slightly odd mixture of chopped chicken or beef mince or fish (careful to check for bones!), mixed with a little JWB pouch and a handful or two of Eukanuba. I couldn't believe they ate the whole huge bowl I'd prepared tonight, usually they leave a little kibble, and tonight I'd made more than usual to finish up the fish! :-)

I've fed Euk for years and can't honestly say a bad word about it.  Dogs thrived on it.  The only thing I did hear is that they got a bit of a slating for the advertised feeding amounts per weight on the bag, too little to sustain the required weight.  I feed by hand and eye tho.
