Topic Other Boards / Foo / My kitten is poorly again :-(
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 11.01.08 09:35 UTC
She had an ear infection about 4 weeks ago and was given some ear drops. It seemed to clear things up but now shes got it in the other ear. Ive got some of the ear drops left from before so Ive started giving her those again but why is she getting them and is there anything I can do to prevent it? She's really happy in herself (until I give her the ear drops ) but isnt eating her food all at once like normal. Shes just nibbling on it through the day. We're due back at the vets in 2 weeks for her 2nd injections.

ah bless - I dont really know about cats Tracy but when my daughter was small she got ear infections all the time and the doctor said because she is so small all the tubes are so connected and close together - ears, nose, throat - that its very easy for one bit to affect another etc - could be the same with kittens...

hope  she gets better,

Her immune system is probably still not back to full strength after her cat flu and it make take time to do so poor little mite.

I would pop her to the vets and aso get some other food into her that will be tempting to her to try and get some fuel inside her ;)

Try some cooked chicken or tuna as that normally will tempt a pussy :)

Is she allowed cooked chicken etc because Ive only been giving her kitten food.

One lady suggested that maybe she was guzzling it to start with because she had worms but now that the worming tablet has kicked in she may actually be full and just going back when shes a bit hungry?

Ive come to the conclusion that Ive given her the infection in the other ear because I used the same pipet to put the stuff in both ears so essentially ive cross infected. :(

Also I think she may have mites because someone said if they scratch their ear and it makes a wet sound it could be mites - and it does make a wet sound (although I had just given her the drops )

Yes a few supplements to her diet will not harm her especially if she is not eating properly. How much are you giving her and how much is she eating ? Little and often is also a good idea.

Was it an ear infection or ear MITES? Ear mites would be far, far more common. They need a lot of treatment to clear -usually 3 weeks worth and the vital thing is to carefully clean the ear each and every day -into the ear canal, not just outer ear. It's a good idea to use oil of some sort (medicinal paraffin oil or baby oil for instance) to clean it with. I know 2 people who didn't bother cleaning the ears, just put drops in, and the mites lasted a full year. Also even if just one ear looks affected, treat both -but make sure to treat the clean looking one LAST so as to not transfer anything.

Ok so do I use cotton wool or something like that to clean it with?

The vet said it was an infection due to the cold she had but Im not so sure now.

Cotton wool for outer ear and cotton tops for inner -just use good quality ones (like Johnson's) that don't bed too eaisly or come off. :)

And how far in do I go?

I will get some Johnsons baby oil tonight because I dont have anything like that in my house! :)

Tracy,

If it was me and I wasn't sure what it was I would ring the vets and get an appointment. :)

If the ear is dirty  (dark brown, blackish) then you go as far in as you can. You cannot go too far because the ear canal ends in a sharp bend which you cannot get past, so you cannot damage the ear drum.

She's much better now thank you. It seems like her ears and cleared but Im going to keep cleaning and dropping (drops) in them for another week just to make sure. Shes back eating (and seems to be eating more - she was on 1 sachet and milk a day but it doesnt seem enough for her now) and shes back playing.

I have some lovely photos of her so I will try and get them on! :D
