His name he's got straight but Come, Sit, Feet, Leave It and Don't Bite are exercises in frustration.  Not puppy-boy, I'm quite pleased with him.  It's the OH that can't seem to get it.  Last night I told OH how well puppy was doing with Sit and a bit later OH wanted to try.  What do I hear but, "puppy, can you sit?" quickly followed by, "puppy sit?, puppy sit?".  He, OH, is just as bad with the other commands.  This is our third dog, second puppy.  Why can't he learn?  :(

I have to say that I mainly do the training with our exisitng boy and it wll probably be the same with our new boy. As much as my OH loves them he doesn't share the enthusiasm for training that I do and doesn't have the patience either! ;)

My OH is exactly the same.  On the occasions that he does get the coomand right, he issues it likes he's a prison warden ordering a lockdown   And then he complains that the dogs behave better for me and never listen to him. I have explained and demonstrated time and time again that they only respond to precise commands, given in a happy and light tone of voice but, honestly, the dogs are easier to train than he is

:D :D :D :D

AHHH now that sounds very familiar :D :D :D

Is there a residential school that would be of any use here?

Hee hee, I'm glad I'm not the only one! When we got our first dogs we had a pet training book and taught 'sit' first as it said. Then I got hooked on showing, so my next dog I taught her 'stand' first. But I was constantly finding my husband telling her 'sit, sit Ellie', and I was saying 'no, she's got to learn stand first, she can do sit later!' :-)

I also have the problem with my mum saying 'down' instead of 'off', and my dad always encourages them to jump up all over him!

Snap! :)

PS  It must be a 'man thing' ;)

My friend and I have had countless arguments about this! We've been walking together since my Dobe was a pup and spend a lot of time round each others houses so it's fair enough that he needs to be able to give my dog commands etc, but he can never get it right! He consistently uses my dog's name when telling him off despite me telling him that his name should only be used as a happy thing. He uses "sit down" when sit and down are two completely different commands! He uses "get down" when I use "off" (for furniture etc). The list goes on and on. Then we get into a punch up about how my dog is SO disobedient

Not sure if it is a 'Man thing'   my ten year old man cub is doing fine with the dogs - he's even training them to jump thru hoops  and understands that he can't allow the oldest one to be 'spoiled' even a little bit as she will then think she can rule us all and ignore any requests and her behaviour on lead becomes appalling   The other one can be 'spoiled' far more and just loves us more for it, but then she isn't ambitious  :)

23 year old daughter still hasn't a clue  although isn't completely useless, but just doesn't have quite the 'dog sense' of her younger bro.

OH is the worst - "get down! off! sit! stay!"  all just to calm the dogs when he gets in.  Needless to say, they go Mental LOL  anyone would think he hasn't lived with a dog for the last 23 years! LOL

Dill,

You have it on your shoulders to ensure your little man becomes a role model to all men! ;)

Oh my brother drives me crazy with this when he visits, for almost 30 years (since I first started obedience training) I've been telling him it's OFF the sofa and DOWN means to lie down and still he insists on telling the dogs DOWN while standing in front of the sofa:rolleyes:. He's an intelligent man and it's not rocket science - why can't he get it!? I really feel for those of you who have to put up with one of these full time :D

Ten years of training and I still can't get a decent load of wash out of mine. :-D

My OH is hopeless! It's a wonder my dogs are as good as they are. Simple concepts seem to go right over his head. This is a very clever man, VP of engineering, organised and meticulous at work. I think he just doesn't care that much. He really has no idea how hard the dogs would be to live with if he raised them so he just doesn't get how important consistency is. Jumping up is the huge issue in our house. :(

My OH isn't too bad but he has had a good owner for the last ten years :D

My four year old is excellent at commands and has learnt if they come try and play or help her do puzzles etc if she is on the floor she makes them sit which they do without any problems  She also is very good on sit and leave commands when she is making them retrieve things :)
