two weeks befor xmas I developed a toothache!!!
There was a cold easterly wind about & being out in all weathers (with dog) I thought I had caught a cold in my mouth! The pain on drinking anything was excruciating & lasted for about one minute!
Thinking of all the food & drink that I may have to miss I took myself along to the dentist Who xrayed, hammered, blowed cold air & squirted cold water onto the sensitive side of my mouth all to no affect! So to the price of £16 told me to take painkillers & put blobs of sensodyne onto the affected gum & tooth...This I did ~to no avail...In desperation I went to  a health food shop & was supplied with bud clove oil....This instantly killed all the pain & I had an enjoyable pain free xmas!
About 10 minutes ago ~ I was eating nuts~ & the offending tooth fell out~~~~~~~nightmare!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:  My faith in DENTISTS is now nil!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

OMG there is nothing worse than toothache. Poor you. I had really bad tooth ache New Years Eve a few years ago and I was hitting the roof with the pain. I found too that the clove oil helped. It was also a good excuse to have several rather large whiskies "to numb the pain" Ha ha. I am glad you are feeling better.

I agree it really is the worst pain, I suffer on and off with toothache between 2 teeth which drives me insane but the dentist can't find the problem (after several hundred pounds!)

Angels2, Have you not got an 'out of hours' dentist?  It is one way of seeing another dentist for a second opinion.  :)

Can you identify "triggers" for your toothache?  I've had something weird going on with my teeth for years and it cannot be solved by my Dentist either.  Mine affects certain teeth, mostly, but when it's really bad, all of them, including the top two front ones that are supposedly "dead" and have no nerves post root canal.  I'm usually knocked out of commission for about an hour a day while I apply cold packs and fight off nausea and headache that feels like a migraine but does not respond to my migraine medicine.

Not sure how old you are but are you sure your not expereincing gum problems as this seems to affect the whole mouth.

I had a bit of bother with really bad toothache after having a couple of crowns fitted but I started to use the little brushes for flossing instead of just floss and it has really helped.

Yes, receeding gums probably are part of the problem but my Dentist is mystified as to why the triggers and the affected teeth have changed over the years.  It used to be the top two front after I was out in the cold for at least half an hour.  Half an hour later I would be in agony with tears running down my face and the pain would spread to other teeth.  After the root canal it started being the bottom two teeth but still spread to others, including the top two, and started happening after I was outside in any temperature, even +27C.   On really bad times it would last for many hours.  Most perplexing was the root canal which was discovered to be needing without the typical pain people feel, other than with the cold.  As my Dentist says, weird.  To be honest, now, after 15 years of this, it seems to be lessening.

It is always better to get a 2nd opinion if your not 100% convinced. I was told by my dentist I needed a tooth out after getting sensitive teeth after a filling however I refused and he told me that if I did not get it out I would have an absess within  the week. I got a 2nd opinion straight away and it seems my gum area was badly bruised and that I did not need my tooth taken out ! My new dentist took all of 30 seconds looking in my mouth to tell me this - he just struck the offending tooth with an instrument then told me it was bruised but okay. He said it would take a few weeks to heal up but that it would be fine. And to this day I have not had another problem with it and that was 7 yrs ago. Just shows you....
