I have a question for any o f you out there who may know about employment law.
I work for sub contract as a supervisor for a rail company. Due tio engineering work on a cetain line, I was told that on Saturday only 2 staff were required for their shift. This meant that 2 people had to take a days holiday or a day off without pay. They were given less than 24 hours notice. Can the employers do this. Lets face it with train services, this could happen several times in a year but seems pretty unfair on the workers.

i am classed as a temp worker (despite being here over 2 years) and our employers do this all the time, usually on the day in question (if its very quiet etc). i work for an employment agency but for them i work for tesco (i.e. i work there but am not tesco staff).

It just seems so unfair though. I thought maybe it was not really allowed but it looks like they can get away with it.

Hi, Sorry to hear of your plight. There is an advisory service called ACAS. The website address is www.acas.co.uk. They have a helpline number for any queries regarding employment law etc. The tel no is 08457474747. There are also regional office nos on their website. I have called them a few times to query things and have always found them to be extremely helpful. I hope this helps.
