Just got called into the kitchen by fintan, the dogs who sleep in the kitchen went to bed about 20 mins ago
He went into the kitchen and the floor is covered in blood in patches.

Lakota (wolf hybrid) has an injury on her back leg near her dew claw, it is not bleeding as badly now but she is in pain and i spent time examining her and my hands were covered in blood

Have given her loads of water, she will not keep a bandage on am just about to call the vet
It does not look like a ripped dew claw as it is still there, and is too high up to be a ripped pad

Any suggestions?

Rang the vet, have now cleaned the wound, she actually has a gash which is about an inch long and deep enough beside her dew claw, no idea how she got it at all

Cleaned the wound, put gauze over it, then kitchen towel over the gauze as have no bandages, then taped it

Found a buster collar as well so she can't take it off.

She has trotted back out to the garden now to do her nightly patrol so is not too upset by the whole thing.

off to the vet in the morning for stitches.

Hope she is ok. it doesn't sound as if it needs stitching to me (but then some vets would probably encourage the extra business!) and I guess its a good lesson to learn in always having bandages etc to hand. My house looks like a casualty dept. there are so many bandages/sterile pads etc about! :)

The wound was very deep, it looks like she stepped on some very sharp object which sliced into her leg.

Have had it stitched by the vet today, funnily enough sam, I tend not to worry about wounds that size and getting them stitched, but this was very deep and just around her dew claw, so wanted to avoid any chances of it getting infected with goo ..

I usually do have a stock of gauze, antiseptic wipes, hibiscrub, bandages and vet wrap, but have been careless and let it run down.

Will stock up again tonight :)

Thanks

I did a bulk buy of vet wrap (20!) a few weeks ago....forthcoming season & all that.....one can never have too much vet wrap!!! :)
Have you tried that intrasite gel yet, everyone raves about it but I am not wholly convinced.

No have just heard about it, this is the stuff that can be used on a wound to help it heal? instead of stitches?

Hi Sam sorry to jump in on this thread but intrasite gel is working wonders on my pups foot.I posted about her slicing her pad and eventually having to have it removed well you can almost see it regenerating with the intrasite on each time it is dressed (which is quite often cause she won't leave it alone).Gillian

Glad to hear its working for you Gillian & hope pups foot soon better.....I have used it on vets suggestion on a gravelling but with no actual result. Also used it on a bite (dog bite) but found it no more useful than salt water, but I can only speak as I find & I am willing to try it again if the need arises. :)
