Topic Dog Boards / General / advice on owning more than one dog

Hi All, my boyfriend has a two year old doberman and I desparetely want another staffordshire bull terrior but we are planning on moving in together in March. Are these breeds of dog know to get along with other dogs or could there be issues? The doberman appears to get on with other dogs when we are walking him, but we are afraid his reactions may be different with another dog (we actually would like a bitch)in the household. My worst nightmare would be to get a staffy puppy and then find we can't keep her as they don't get on. Any advice and comments greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance, Emma

What is the age and temperament of the doberman and what age would you be looking at for the new addition?

Staffordshire Bull Terriers don't always get on with other breeds I believe, but there are a few people on here with them who will be able to advise better.

And male dobes will not normally happily live with another Male of a dominant breed.

>>>Staffordshire Bull Terriers don't always get on with other breeds I believe<<<<<

Brought up from a young age they can do - although as with any breed of dog it is dependant upon individual temperament
I have three staffords and a stafford cross who is a rescue-
the rescue does not get on with my girl although she adores my male- the staffords all get on together

ETA sex can often play a factor in relationships also as mentioned- male staffords often wont get on with another male although having said that I know of others who live happily together

Hi lel, the doberman is just over two years old and is the softest thing ever. Very firendly towards everyone (if we ever have a break in he would welcome the robber!) including children. Hes our big baby! When we walk him around a local field known to dog walkers he often runs up to other dogs but in a playful way, never actually touches them, just runs round them in circles in a playful manner. My boyfriends brother has a three year old doberman and they have been in the house together several times and there have not been any major issues (when there have its always been the brothers dog mainly barking and ours would come running away to us). I would like to get the staffy from a pup and preferably a bitch

I dont have experience of dobermans so cannot comment on the breed but I do know when I have ever introduced my staffords as pups to adult staffords there have not been any issues (touch wood) but that doesnt mean there couldnt be as I mentioned earlier about individual temperaments .... though male to female mix would definately be the better option rather than two males
Just make sure that if you decide to go ahead with it that you choose a reputable breeder and that pup is health tested clear of L2 and Hc

I would imagine if you source a Staff bitch pup from a reputable breeder (go through breed clubs) breeding for sociable temperament (not one of the unfortunately poorly bred litters bred by irresponsible people) then I cannot see an issue with your boy who will no doubt be more than happy to be bossed by a girly.

I know and have met some super staffs, sadly I have also met the dog aggressive highly strung over excitable ones bred and mishandled by idiots aplenty too.

Thanks for all your comments guys and gals. I have had a staffy in the past (unfortunately my ex won the battle to keep her when we broke up) hence why I am so desparate to have another as I loved her to bits and know how much of a soft, caring animal they can be. I would only source her from a reputable breeder beacuse of, as you say, some of the idiots who bring them up to be rough and violent, which they are such the opposite when looked after properly.

SBT's are a bullbreed so that generally means they dont get on with same sex situations with any dog, but plenty of people on here know people who have even tho I would never take that risk personally! :)

If you get a bitch SBT that would fair better for your male dobe, and they should get on OK as long as you supervise the play and let them know each others boundaries.

However that doesnt mean she will like other dogs, thats just something you may have to deal with in getting a SBT, usually theyre friendly enough but some just dont like other dogs plain and simple!

one of our pups went to a couple who already had a sbt and apparently they adore each other-mixed sex but 2 bullbreeds

mixed bullbreeds often get on like a house on fire, its 2 males I would never risk!

And before people jump down my throat I know people have successfully done it, but I prefer 2 sexes anyway, its nice to have a girlie and a boy! :)

actually while people do manage it very effectively i must say our dogs (as in the male not the general) have never been great with other dogs (again as in males). only one (who was attacked and took against them) has been properly aggressive with them but they are quite protective is all so get a wee bit jumpy. saying that our current boys breeder has father and son living together perfectly happily under the rule of a quite small bitch. it's weird how they work sometimes
