Hi Dave
Do you take your pup to any basic obedience classes??
This can help, not only with the socialising aspect, but they will also teach you healwork etc...
Spaniels are not easy..:D I have two cockers, that have both passed their obedience course, and still pull like tanks :( :D
I also use a half check collar (if this is what they are called) (?) Fabric underneath the neck and chain on top of the neck...works well for me...but some training when you are out walking wouldn't hurt..ie., if he/she pulls, gently pull him/her back and say "steady" keep doing this and he/she will eventually learn that pulling, and being pulled back is not much fun...IMO.....
But if you don't go to the training classes, I would as it is a real learning curve for them...
Hope that helps...

My dogs are terriable on the lead as I have siberian Huskys and thats whats bred into them to pull being a little person its very hard I take mine to dog lessons and their lead work has really improved all my dogs wear a halti to this straps around their nose and chin and a strap fastens around the back of the neck and know they trot lovely at the side of me took them a bit of getting use to but if start when they are young it will be a lot easier for you you can get haltis from most pet shops as for your plants do what I had to dig them up and put them around the front instead ive got hanging baskets around the back as its the only thing safe!

Not easy with a springer. My 22 mnth old springer is quick to learn (agility training is coming on nicely) but lead work is a different kettle of fish. And yes shes been to basic obedience.
Not much help I know, sorry.

My springers were also bad at pulling - until I got Lupi harnesses for them. Much better now and they dont get strangled by continually pulling them back! I would definitely recommend them, they work for both mine and at least walking is more pleasurable!!
