I know I will be able to find the answer from KC pages but I have been a bit lazy:rolleyes:

In UK is it possible to mate your bitch with 2 dogs, DNA the pups and register the litter?
I know this is possible in few countries, I have been to see a litter that was going to be "mixed litter" so started thinking about this...
I think it is a good thing as you could have puppies of differing genes in one litter...

The breeder wanted to use a old dog with lower sperm count but did not want to possibly have a miss so used a young upcoming dog too.
Unfortunately the litter that resulted all puppies ended up being offspring of the younger dog...

Yes they can be registered.

Yes, it's happened in my own breed - although through accidental matings with resident males.

I know it's fairly common to do these matings intentionally over seas - often for the reasons you mention of one dog being less fertile / elderly etc. How common intentional dual matings are done here I have no idea but certainly with the advances of DNA it is not difficult to identify the sires (providing they themselves weren't litter mates for eg!)

regards, Teri :)

I had seen it discussed as desirable in breeds with large litters like Great Danes to get the maximum benefit from breeding from a bitch without having to put her through an extra pregnancy.

Yes, I can see it would definitely have a few upsides - do you know if the KC are completely au fait with it then and/or do you know of many cases?  Also in permitted AIs with frozen semen being used - I can see it would be beneficial there too :)

Only read about it in articles that were US based, and I think Ai was part of it.

Thank you for your replies.
I wonder if it is used to the benefits it can bring or if it is something that only gets used in cases like accidents etc...

both I would imagine, but genrally not easy to arange here where the bitch woudl ahve to actually be mated by two dos in a short space of time, as opposed to the USA where the semen from several dogs might be inseminated into the bitch at one session.

There's been a couple of articles about it in DW the last month or so.
