Topic Dog Boards / General / Is Kennel cough Jab essential?
- By Mobby [gb] Date 21.12.07 19:33 UTC
Leo had his jabs today! (hes 12 weeks on sunday!)

Anyway the vet (not my usual, but a locum!) asked if he was going to be going to puppy training classes, i confirmed that yes he would.... next minute hes giving him the kennel cough thingy up his nose!! didn't ask if we wanted it done or anything!!!!!!

Im:
a, a bit miffed that i didn't have a chance to research it before agreeing..... however after it was done i did ask about it and he said that KC is rife around here at the moment so i shouldn't take any chances.......

b, a bit confused as to why he needed it when it was his first lot of jabs, so hes not going anywhere for at least 3 weeks!!

is the KC Vac recommended for puppies Leos age now? i was just expecting one jab..... would rather have gone back before puppy classes for the KC vacc if it was needed, dont want to overload his system with stuff all at once!!

The vet looked at me like  when i said this, so maybe im being over cautious? i obviously DO NOT want him to get KC but i also dont want his body pumped full of stuff when its not needed....

Any ideas?!

Hmmm i'm not sure about the kennel cough as we only had it when our boy went into kennels, but I would say that if I was you I would complain that he did this without your consent too many vets are allowed to just get away with doing things their way!

On the other hand, he is very young and KC could be fatal in one so young :( If it is prevalent then I believe he should have had it, but I would have wanted to have the final say so ;)

When you go back make a verbal moan to the receptionist and say that you are thinking of putting in a letter of complaint.

the thing is, i had no objections to him having it........ but would like to have spoken about the pros and cons first! kwim?

He weighs a whopping 9.75kg, vet said hes going to be a big lad :D

I've never had kennel cough thing up their noses and mine have been in kennels & training classes. Our vet told us it was just their for reassurance but was entirely up to us.

Depends on the kennels, mine have previously been in one which insisted on it.

The intranasal spray doesnt protect againgst all variants of KC so they can still get it even after having the spray
and if you show they can also pick it up-
I know its going around in our little show world at present :(

Mine had the vaccine in August because of going into kennels. They all developed a very very mild cough and one of them had a nasty reaction a couple of days after having it. It has put me off ever giving it to them again. Most of the kennels I looked at insisted on them having the vaccine, I think it lasts for 12 months so if you are planning a holiday next year and your pup will be going into kennels at least he is already covered. I was a little annoyed when my vet gave them the vaccine as he did not mention any side effects so I was totally unprepared when it happened. Good luck with your pup

My lot were booked into a kennels that suddenly started insisting on a kennel cough vaccine - I booked them in elsewhere.  Not only could I not afford the extra £80 to have it done (4 dogs), but it's not even totally effective - there isn't just one strain, and I've known of dogs who've had the vaccine who've gotten KC anyway.

The kennels I use now are aware of that, and pointedly do not ask for boarding dogs to have it - they make a point of making customers aware that it isn't a marvellous, fully-covering thing.

Our kennels insist on it and after searching around (not a big task in Guernsey lol) I can't find one that doesn't.

The KC vaccine we get for our dogs comes in a shot form, just like rabies shots.

I always vaccinate, because it costs say $15 CAD to get it done, but the treatment is more than that and the disease could be fatal.  Also, our dogs go to shows, where who knows what people have brought in (not on purpose, but with incubation times and such.....better safe than sorry)

It would have been nice of the vet to talk to you before instead of just assuming and giving it to your pup.  I would definately make a little complaint about that, since as the dog owner you have final say about what gets done, or doesnt get done, to your dog.

Are you confusing the parainfluenza jab with the Intrac nasal drops, which are for Kennel cough.  The Pi is part of the core set of vaccines given in USA, the Intrac is optional.  I have never had it given to any of mine  as I have known more than one persons dog develop KC after being given it.
- By jackbox Date 23.12.07 09:15 UTC
The only reason my two have KC vaccine( "Intrac")   is because the kennels I use insist on it...in fact its hard to find one that doesnt.

If I  did not use Kennels I would not give them the vaccine, as one or both will usually get a small dose of KC after the vaccine.   I also find ,as it goes up the nose,  they snort most of it back out,  so they don't even get all the dosage

is this to me?? no it was up the nose! just a little gust of air........ leo seems fine though, but im not sure how long for any side effects to show up?? hes certainly settling in........ ive realised now that the wait for a rescue dog is a good thing :D gives you tiem to puppy proof!!!!!! ;) and why is it that out of 3 squeaky toys, 2 chewies and one stuffed teddy that he eats my shoes??:eek:

Little monster......... :D, that said he is sleeping through the night now, getting up to poo at 5am, but then going straight back to sleep...... have had no issues at all yet (aside from my ds having a lovely scratch on his face from an over exited HELLO this morning :), i think Leo was more devestated by Ds crying than ds was though :) :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.12.07 11:33 UTC
No to Crespin as vaccination protoco;ls tend to be different in the US ans America with other things we don't have and it takes to about 16 weeks to have al their shots.
- By Mobby [gb] Date 23.12.07 11:42 UTC
Yep, leo wont be able to go out for another month......... ive arranged to take him to the local woods for his first walk! :) with my mums german shepherd (who adores puppies!!) he gonna have a blast :)n
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.12.07 11:45 UTC
He should be going out now but just not to areas frequented by dogs whose vaccination status is unknown.  the risks to him not socialising are greater than of him catching anything unless there is a local outbreak of any of the canine diseases.

You can take him in the car if you drive.  If not like me you can take him on the bus and to the local shopping centre to sit and watch all the people and of course they will stop and talk to him.

You can visit with friends who have dogs so he doesn't miss out on his canine education all before his jabs are finished.
- By Mobby [gb] Date 23.12.07 11:59 UTC
Really??? OH FANTASTIC :D

I didn't know that!!!!!!!! the vet said not to take him anywhere unless hes carried (but i cant possibly carry him for more than a few feet... hes HUGE!! :))

Ive took him out in the car 4 times, he threw up on me every time..... the last time he managed to hold on untill he got out of the car, but the second time he threw up on the gear stick
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.12.07 12:01 UTC
Have you got a car cage?  Not only for safety but the less he can move about the less sick he will feel.
- By Mobby [gb] Date 23.12.07 12:02 UTC
No, ive got a harness?? he doesn't move at all.. ive noticed if i have the window open he copes slightly better, but not much!
