Does anyone have any ideas how i can keep my kitten off the christmas tree she's driving me mad!!
she constantly attacks the decorations and tries to bite the lights cable. Ive removed her numerous times told her no! tried to distract her, made a hissing noise, shaken a bottle with peebles, in nothing works. Other than take the tree down any ideas?

Was going to say take it down! Other than that, no ideas, sorry

Unfortunately that's kittens. :) I've tried it all in the past. Tied the tree to the wall (as it got knocked over so frequently), used unbreakable ornaments, used no ornaments at ALL but a fibre optic tree on its own. Most kittens grow out of it, but my husband's Maine Coon chews cables and we've not been able to have lights on a tree for the past 6 years. This year we've decided not to bother at all and will just put lights on a big bush outside instead.

In general, kittens that aren't nervous just don't pay attention to being told off.

You could always put it outside LOLOL

My cousin has two large(& I mean large)6 year old cats & they always climbed up his big Xmas tree every year without fail. He now has a small fibre optic tree & they leave that one alone-me i have lights on outside as my kits & dogs would destroy any indoor tree

Keep her out of that room, I would, imagine a Christmas tree irresistible to a kitten.  I used to only have a small one up on a sideboard because of the dogs, but cats can climb.  Can you move the tree to the dining room say where you can keep her out without excluding her from the room you use most.

:-D  I used to have a cat, never mind a kitten who would climb my tree every year and sit in it, he was so careful never knocked a bauble or bit of tinsel off, (So I just used to let him do as he liked) he once scared the life out of a visiting friend she was leaning into the tree admiring our pretend birds and hanging ornaments, when she saw our cat and said, "Doesn't that look lifelike?" at which point our cat touched her with his paw, she jumped out of her skin. :-D I've got some great photo's of him lounging in our Christmas trees.

A little kitten will have a big problem with a tree, just lock her from the room when out and just keep moving her away when in.  It is too enticing for her.

I also never have flashing lights on my indoor tree, having animals too much of a worry.

I had Burmese cats (and kittens LOL ) just about the most determined breed available, but I did manage to discourage them from playing with the christmas tree ;)  and they never paid it any attention after :D

First I put the tree on a really low table (it normally stands about 2ft from the floor) and then decorated it with lights and a few really interesting baubles and left them swinging.  For this to work kitten has to be watching and getting interested.  Then I'd get 'distracted' and look away (tv is the perfect cover ;) )  but still be holding a branch where kitty can't see ;)    When kitty pounces the tree 'falls over' towards her/him making them think they're being attacked by the tree - don't let them get hurt this is why you're holding a branch.   Lots of sympathy cos nasty tree attacked them :) :)  You may have to repeat it once but they should lose interest in it quite quickly ;)

My first Burmese learned after the second tree-fall.  Her daughter sat and watched the tree being decorated, then when I 'got distracted'  turned and looked at mum and then got up and walked away, flicking her tail and giving me a disgusted look - I swear mum told her what would happen!  She never even looked at the tree again - totally ignored it :) :)

Did the same with moggies too and it still worked :) :)

Hope this helps

ETA - vicks rub on the wires should dissuade them from chewing and getting hurt ;)

My two are only allowed where the trees are under strict supervisation ;)

So far (only two days since they were out up ) and they haven't taken any notice of them  Give them time I suppose :D

They don't like real trees?  Ours always have.  Must depend on the species of tree.  We get Scotch Pine, White Spruce or Balsam.  They all smell a wee little bit like tomcat.  Very attractive to cats.
- By Thompson1 [gb] Date 17.12.07 18:14 UTC
try putting some oranges around the bottom, my cats hate the smell of oranges and at christams I convienietly place a bowl of oranges at the base.  No interest from the cats at all lol

>They all smell a wee little bit like tomcat

I have to say that our kittens are really good, they always stop what they are doing when i say no and they have yet to even go near our decorations....the dog on the other hand has chewed lights, decorations, cards!
- By LJS Date 19.12.07 10:43 UTC
Well the tree came down last night with a crash as the norty tortie decided to go tree climbing :rolleyes:

It is being redressed by the eldest daughter at the moment as she was in charge when it happened :D
- By Moonmaiden Date 19.12.07 11:11 UTC
ROFLMAO :D :D :D This is why I don't have a tree, or hanging decorations With the dynamic duo Reg & Jaq they would be swinging from them as well :-D :-D :-D
- By LJS Date 19.12.07 11:26 UTC

- By STARRYEYES Date 19.12.07 18:44 UTC
