- By Lindsay Date 12.12.07 07:52 UTC
I dropped my old mum's trifle bowl a couple of years ago and it shattered into a million pieces. I've not needed one since, but do want to make a sherry trifle this Christmas!

A rather surprising problem I'm finding is that it's almost impossible to find a trifle bowl! Yes, really! I've been to Lakeland, and checked out some online stores such as
John Lewis, Divertimenti, Debenhams etc and just can't seem to find one. I may have found a couple at M and S, I have to check that out.

If anyone has any ideas as to where I can find one, do please let me know! I tend to not use Ebay.

Has anyone else has this problem?!

(I did find a trifle bowl for a huge amount of money, around £70 but I'm not spending that much !! :P )

http://www.lakeland.co.uk/content.aspx?content=noticeboard/recipes/vodka_trifle.htm

I thinking I might be making that one for Christmas  :D :D

Have you tried wandering around charity shops as sure one of them would have a glass bowl you could use as one :)

A few on Ebay as well :)

I've had that Trifle and it was.....just alright actually. OH's sister made it with lemon vodka but, as trifle in general is not my cup of tea, I didn't think it was anything special.

Try TKMaxx for a trifle bowl is there is one near you.  I was in the local store and they had a nice selection of dishes, including bowls that would be suitable for trifle :)
- By Lindsay Date 12.12.07 22:12 UTC
Thanks Lucy, very nice looking recipe there!

Are you more of a vodka girl then? :P

I rather like the bowl they use actually, could easily have gone for that!!

I may have to try ebay, I'll see how I get on with my search!

Shaynlola - thanks, I'll give TKMaxx a try, I never thought about it as I usually just associate it
with clothing. I have one near me so will pop in there next time :)

WOW! That recipe looks great!  Me & my OH are cooking for family for the first time this year & I was gonna make a standard trifle bu think I'll be going with Vodka & Black Cherry now! Slight problem though my dad has a gluten allergy! do the sponge fingers have gluten or wheat in them & if so can you buy gluten free ones from anywhere?
- By Dill [gb] Date 18.12.07 11:11 UTC
Yes the sponge fingers will have wheat in them ;)  don't know where you can buy that type of sponge finger but you can buy gluten free cakes from supermarkets, some chemists and health shops.   Some manufacturers state free from wheat, but use rye flour - THIS CONTAINS GLUTEN  and will NOT be safe.

You will need to read the label and look to avoid RYE, BARLEY  and  WHEAT,  make sure that it is a solid Gluten Free make.

Try Waitrose, Morrisons, Holland and Barrett, and chemists

Be warned tho, they don't come cheap - you can easily pay £4 for a really small cake

Thanks for that Dill, I've managed to get dad a gluten free xmas pudding & mince pies for tesco, not cheap though you were right.  Think he can have them & we canhave the trifle.  I'm doing a practice run on the cherry & vodka trifle 2nite! Fingers crossed it turns out nice.
- By LJS Date 20.12.07 15:35 UTC
Ooh let me know what it is like as we are making it on Monday all beng well :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 23.12.07 09:59 UTC
That trifle sounds lovely :D

I didn't buy the gluten free pud this year :(   I couldn't find a family one for less than £4 so we'll have home-made GF Christmas cake soaked in alcohol and warmed up, served with boozy cream :) :p

To thicken the gravy I use Cornflour rather than GF flour, it works better :)
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 12.12.07 09:49 UTC
My trifle bowl is from Sainsburys, and a gorgeous chunk of glass it is too!

- By LJS Date 12.12.07 10:22 UTC
Not to far away Dee ;)

I have sent Mike the link and he says we should have a dry tonight at making to make sure we know how to do it for Christmas :p
- By Missie Date 12.12.07 10:36 UTC
practise makes perfect eh Lucy? ;)
- By LJS Date 12.12.07 10:37 UTC
Of course as it make take a few trials to get the level of vodka right ;)
- By Lindsay Date 12.12.07 22:14 UTC
Sainsbury's, of course - now why didn't I  think of that??!
Did you get it this year?

I use a large denby dish.  :-)
- By Lori Date 12.12.07 11:37 UTC
I think I bought mine at Ikea but it was a few years ago. It was either there or Fenwicks.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.12.07 16:23 UTC
A punch bowl, salad bowl (clear type) etc is what I thought you used, never knew there was such a thing as a trifle bowl specifically.
- By pavlova [gb] Date 12.12.07 16:26 UTC
I got a good trifle bowl from our local market and only paid about three pounds for it.
- By ange [gb] Date 12.12.07 17:08 UTC
Cheers Lucy. I've got some Raspberry Vodka that I've  made which has been under the stairs for 3 months. That recipe is ideal for christmas. You can probably pick up a trifle bowl from a charity shop or a car boot sale.
- By LJS Date 12.12.07 17:47 UTC
Ooooohh homemade raspberry vodka, that sounds nice and even nicer in the trifle :D

M & S seem to do a couple - a bobbly one for £15 (looked rather unusual) and a plain one for £9.50.  Unfortunately, they don't give their capacities, so don't know if they'd be the right size.  I'd second trying the charity shops - I'm sure they'd have some pretty cheaply :)

Edited to add - shows I didn't read your intial post properly - you've already found the M & S ones :)
- By Lindsay Date 12.12.07 22:17 UTC
M & S seem to do a couple - a bobbly one for £15 (looked rather unusual) and a plain one for £9.50.

Found them as you saw, and bought one today - but I may take it back. It's the bobbly one, but I'm not keen on it  now.
I couldn't find the other one in my store, perhaps they've sold out.

I will be buying a ready made trifle at this rate :P :P

I've not seen any yet in charity shops local to us, but will keep trying. My OH Des often goes to them, so will ask him to keep an eye out
this week if I dont find one first.

Thanks everyone for your ideas,

Lindsay

Hi Lindsay

Oh, how disappointing that you don't like it now :(  Have any of your friends got one you could borrow (I've got lots of glass bowls!) and then you can take your time finding one you really like?
- By Dill [gb] Date 12.12.07 23:20 UTC
How about this?

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10057251

Do you have an IKEA near you?  they often have more in stock than on the website ;)
- By Blue Date 13.12.07 00:33 UTC
They go up to huge sizes to ..
- By Lindsay Date 13.12.07 22:49 UTC
Yes I've been thinking along those lines, I think it's worth taking my time to find a good one...:)

Thanks for the Ikea link, can't see the photo but checked out their bowls...
Thanks everyone for your help!

- By Lindsay Date 14.12.07 11:48 UTC

Have you checked Sainsbury's, Lindsay? Have now seen mine in two stores, at £9.99. Well, I like it anyway ...

Just an update, I found one a few days ago in TK Maxx. Wasn't expecting to find one but it jumped out at me on the shelf! We were actually in there looking for clothes at that particular moment! Anyway, I'm very pleased with it, and it's just the right size. Many thanks guys for all your help!

Roll on Christmas teatime and trifle time :P

Good news. Hope you took notes while watching Heston Blumenthal make his trifle tonight. ;-) (handmade 100's of 1000's!?!?)
- By LJS Date 19.12.07 10:41 UTC
I saw him this morning on BBC Breakfast and he was talking about the Christmas tree with sugar baubles stuffed with Salmon Mousse for entrees
- By Lori Date 19.12.07 11:12 UTC
where's the wuh shudder smiley when you need one

at least he wasn't responsible for the brussel sprout cake on earlier!

I am going to use some of his tips for my trifle though. That's what I tend to do with his recipes. I use the science but avoid some of the labour.
- By LJS Date 19.12.07 16:31 UTC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/trifle_87546.shtml

Blimey hope you have a few days to make his trifle recipe :eek:
- By Lori Date 19.12.07 18:10 UTC
Well I've done his black forrest gateaux (to a point, I didn't make my own aero bar!) and his spag bol. His recipes are marathons; that's why I just take stuff away now - like the addition of a starch to cream to make it creamier or using fructose to sweeten strawberries. I will try the custard but he can stuff the olive paste! (guess I'll never get a michellin star ;-))
- By LJS Date 19.12.07 18:17 UTC
So what is his difference approach to making normal Spag Bol which is chucking it all in a big pan and heat on the hob for a while  :D  ?
- By Lori Date 19.12.07 20:30 UTC
Lots of ingredients, hours of cooking, seperate compote (also hours) all fits in a 3 page Word document. :)
- By gembo [gb] Date 02.01.08 09:36 UTC
Well I made the Vodka & Black Cherry trifle for Xmas day desert & it went down very well indeed, my brother & girlf friends had seconds & cleared the whole bowl! Really easy to make, I think this might become a favourite of mine! My dad was a bit naughty though & sneaked a bit, made him bloat up but he said ti was worth it!!! Happy new year everyone!
- By LJS Date 02.01.08 09:49 UTC
Yes we did as well and it was very moreish :eek: :D
