Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How to add Two and Two and make 5 in the most crass way

This was posted on my breed list passed on: http://www.peta.org/feat/abc/video2.asp Just what you would expect from PETA.

The cause of shelter animals dying is irresponsible breeding and ownership.

Based on US figures here: http://www.nopuppymillscanada.ca/back_yard_breeders.htm only around 12% of pedigree dogs are responsibly bred by breed enthusiasts who health tests, show and/or work their dogs.

Typical of PETA - they're just nutters  - but dangerous nutters.

Absolutely ridiculous and exactly what should be expected of PETA.

Rescue dogs are just not suitable for some people, and PETA would be far better off spending their time trying to do something constructive instead of sensationalist. Idiots.

Why would you have someone in your house congratulating you on your new puppy anyway?

ETA: Oh I see, that's meant to be the breeder's house is it

They scare me, but so does my son who occasionally wears a peta t.shirt......says (People Eat Tasty Animals)!
I reckon he's asking for trouble.

What a bizarre video, I watched the sex talk one too. They do certainly get their point across, but for me it's not necessarily the right point!

Now what we need is a good short public information film about how a pup should be chosen from one of the minority of good breeders so that the puppy farmers and irresponsible breeders find themselves without a market, then the shelters would be practically empty or with waiting lists of people waiting for the occasional dog to come in.

I agree Brainless, but sadly it won't be the case with the popular breeds.  The more I read online discussions (not necessarily this board), the more I think it's a losing battle.  Anyone with a bitch thinks it their right to have puppies often with the best of intentions but for purely sentimental reasons.  Then there are those who don't want to pay 'show' prices, and just want a pet so won't go to a reputable breeder regardless.  I think it's staffies and labs that suffer most from this sort of breeding.

What a terrible terrible advert.

Dont know about in the UK, but it is getting air time in Canada on TV, during PRIME TIME!!!!

The video shocked me, and PETA needs to learn to do things that get their message across, without the shock value.  To me, that looks poorly on the group, and makes me angry with the group.

I know, when I go to a breeder for a pup, that I know what breed I am getting, I can see how it has been raised, there are questions asked of me from the breeder, not just do you have the money.  I know what kind of temperment I am going to have, I know what size the dog should be, I can get references, etc.

At a pound, it seems, there is none of this.  I could come home with something that says it is a Maltese cross, and it turned out to must have been crossed with a Great Dane cos it got so big.  You also dont know how these dogs were treated before, or even at the shelter.  You dont know of health issues, because unfortunately if the dog doesnt look sick when it comes in, it is put straight to adoption.  Could it be carrying a disease?  Could it have a disease that could kill my other dogs?

There are pros and cons, when going to either a breeder or a shelter.  But it must be individually weighed, and not shoved down peoples throat.

PETA should focus on getting the message out that unless you are showing/breeding correctly, etc, that you should spay and neuter your pets.  Come on, Bob Barker did on the Price is Right (game show) for over 50 years, and a lot of people know about it.  Just with a simple message at the end of the show.  Got the message across.

Anyways, my rant on PETA.  Hate the comercial!!!!!!!

Dreadful and absurd. It's irresponsible ownership that leads dogs to shelters and death.

OMG, I cannot believe their statement!

I'd laugh if I didn't find it so disgusting!!! :-(

Is this the same PETA who take dogs from shelters and  euthanase them in the back of vans dumping the bodies in public dustbins
- By salukipuppup [gb] Date 13.12.07 20:53 UTC
Euthanise them in the back of a van? Never heard anything about that before...

I have to say those were very strange videos, bordering on mildly disturbing... They seem like something you'd see as a joke on Tarrant on TV or something.

>Euthanise them in the back of a van? Never heard anything about that before...

They ended up in court over it. They were taking dogs out of dog pounds & putting them now & then dumping the bodies. They also steal & release show dogs as they do not approve of owning any animals & are working towards having ALL animals returned to the wild :rolleyes::rolleyes: They are one sick set of people

:-D Would they also like to become prey for all of those animals returned to the wild too. I for one would not like packs of wild dogs roaming around in this country, I guess they would just exterminate them all instead, perhaps these people actually don't like animals at all.
- By munrogirl76 Date 16.12.07 18:01 UTC
 I thought they didn't believe in keeping animals as pets anyway.
