There's a short-legged lab in the village. It's a pedigree, but has a degree of dwarfism which makes it look more like a lab/basset cross!

That kind of dwarfism does crop up with labs and other breeds too.  Is your dog just small size but proportionate, or does she have a normal body but shorter than normal legs?  Sometimes you jsut get auntypically small or large individuals, especially if the breed standard was not uppermost in the 'breeder's' mind.

My curiosity is piqued ....

I would like to know her lines PM me (dont put on public forum) ... I do know of a litter of 9 which all turned out to be on the small side... just never reached the height, they are now 3yrs going on 4 years... AND know the dad has produced some 'shorter' dogs, although have to say, very proportioned and 3 of the litter did well in the showring qualifying for crufts etc, until they reached Junior...

Including my Summer  :D  my mighty midget ;)

She isnt that short on leg, but against some of the taller dogs she looks positively 'dwarfed', but in real terms against the standard is just a half inch below requirement....

Like your girl, her withers are just below the knee....

If she is in proportion, ie: length of her back is not much longer that her legs, then she is simply small.

Bear in mind.. many many Labs out there are very much taller than the breed standard,

look at your girls attributes against the breed standard, not other Labs :D

I also have a pedigree labrador who is short, the line she comes from all normal size but in this litter their were 2 short girls. Mine is one and a half inches under breed standard and the other pup is half an inch under breed standard.
Mine won well as a puppy but once she got to 15 months was always invited back in the ring to challenge for Best Puppy and I used to inform the judge she was too old! She is all in porportion and very nice to look at. Her puppies are all normal size.

Good things come in small packages.
