Topic Other Boards / Foo / Any dbx (how to extract) whiz kids out there?

Anyone?  About 75% of my OE mail folders with contents have disappeared.  Still have dbx back ups of them but can't work out how to open them (what program as OE doesn't seem to work  ) or how to import or copy them back into OE ...

hopefully, Teri :)

I did a search for the problema and found a page on microsoft about fixing what may be a corrupted database file. If that's your problem you may find your answer here. Google did throw up lots of second party applications for uncompressing dbx files for use again if that doesn't work.

Good luck! I use Outlook and keep all my messages on the mail server until I delete them from my mailbox so I'm afraid I don't have personal experience with back-ups.

Thanks Lori - I've been googling all day and tried various tricks but dont seem to be getting anywhere.  Most of the cures seem more problematic than the original issue LOL.  Seems MS are very aware of the failings in Outlook Express but dont have a tool to resolve them (but they know a man who has .......  hmm, ex MS of course!)

Apparently this major irritation is often caused by scanning incoming mail for virus etc and, say MS, its safer NOT to do so (so why have all the major virus programs built in that feature  ) I think it's going to be a long night :D

Cheers, Teri

bump :D

Or alternatively does anyone know how to export them into mailing system on vista ....... cause I'm thinking it's probably going to be easier (and significantly cheaper in the short term than all this extra caffeine, nicotine, manicures and pending hair extensions ) to change the lap top   :P

You don't have Outlook lurking around do you? If you have Office you probably do. It can import OE .dbx files so you could try that.

Vista uses Windows Mail instead of OE. It can import OE messages. There's a page about it here.

I found some import instructions for OE in the process. It's not your exact problem but hey, who knows! It looks easier than what I found yesterday. All a pharf.

When you get your mail working again I find it much easier to keep a copy of all my messages on the mail server. That way if your hard disk dies you don't lose any email. When you start up your mail client you can retrieve everything on the server all over again. It's not the default setting so you would have to change it after you set up your account. You also have access to all of your messages from any computer with internet access via webmail.

You'll need a wig and a valium at this rate. :-D

Yep, got Office but didn't load Outlook so can do that now - brill idea Lori, you're a star :) :) :)

Tried the link but I don't seem to have a hexadecimal_string on my doings (now feeling somewhat gutted, robbed, done up like a turkey :D - I want a hexa whatsit now more than anything else  :P )

Since it's cold out I'll settle for a wooly hat and ask Santa for the wig :D  A cunning plan methinks!

Slangeva medeary ;)

You'll like Outlook. It's way better than OE. You can create as many calendars as you want too; one for showing for example. ;-)

You can have my hexadecimal strings! think I'm getting too old to go out in them anyway. LOL :-D

Eek, I hope Outlook works or it will be me bringing you that wig. :-D

sneaks in to confess

Haven't quite sorted the transfer yet BUT gone got meself a new lap top just before the shops shut :D  OK, ok, will still have to work out the other stuff but now transfer to vista something or other ......

First I gotta work out the idiowhatzitz of this particular keyboard which may take some time   BUT I reckon this was more cost effective than all that hair work, beauty therapy, manicures with (ugly) nail extensions etc - see, I've really saved OH a fortune ;)

wanna a hat?  :P

Oh a new toy! :-D the best solution of all. Also remind OH that you will be a happy loving spouse instead of a grumpy louse and he will surely approve of your purchase. :)

Now remember when you set your mail stuff up this time leave the messages on the server if you can. It will save you losing stuff if your laptop ever dies again. In Outlook that's in Change your email account > More settings > Advanced, then turn on Leave a copy of messages on the server and Remove from server when deleted from 'Deleted Items'.

Have fun with your new toy. :-D
