Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / need advice about ship bitch for breeding

Hello,I want to know if you must ship you bitch to his first breeding when is the safe time to ship bitch back home after her last mating.
I found some breeder suggest keep bred bitch in the stud dog 's home for 3 weeks. Is this enough safe to prevent ship stress?
thanks.

I'm assuming that you're not in the UK, because here bitch owners travel with their bitch to the stud dog's premises, usually there and back on the same day.

You'd probably get more information on a US-based forum.

I have travelled abroad to mate my bitch but would not have allowed her to go on her own.  I stayed a week and flew back with her, she was of course in a Kennel in the hold and on the return journey had to travel cargo which meant several hours separation each end of the journey.

If you bitch is a good traveller with a  bomb proof temperament then she should be able to fly right back with you.

Certainly my US contacts who have stud dogs have the bitch and owner come to stay.

If I ever do it I will also go over with my bitch and spend the time there.  Shouldn't take 3 weeks though.

I had to guess and pick the right sort of period.  You generally have to book flight 2 weeks before flying.  I booked on the day she came in travelling out day 12 and returning day 19, got her mated days 15 to 17, phew!

Brainless what would have you done had she not taken? What a nightmare and expense that would have been :(

I would have lost £1200 fares and £550 stud fee.

As it is I got a lovely litter of predominantly males.  Of the two bitches one had been promised as a foundation for a new breeder, and I kept the other who isn't as good.  Any of the five males had they been female would have been a better option to keep if they had been girls.

Sadly only one of the males has been shown at all, and looks like they aren't really going to bother, one owner entered WKC and forgot to go, and hasn't bothered again, and a third that was going to have a go got put off by their first ringcraft class the week after Crufts.

So far the male that has turned out the nicest I think was always destined to be a Pet only.

So I can just hope with the trouble to get the new bloodline I can improve in the next generation on the pup I kept.

So presumably that one's being shown then? :) And she'll be a continuation of the lines too. Shame about the boys though - maybe they'll change their minds and get into showing later?

I believe that it is best to ship the bitch staight back after the breeding is accomplished.
The embyos are free floating up to 19-21 days before they attach to the uterus. Shipping when they are not yet attached would help protect them from any stress the bitch may go through in shipping, as they are not yet in "contact" directly with her system.
Of course, there are those that feel that one should wait UNTIL they are implanted, as the shipping stress may prevent them from doing so. So far, my best luck ahs been with shipping straight back.

I think travelling with the owner will be least stressful even if the bitch has to go in the hold for the actual flight.
