Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / dachshund house training struggle

  My new dachsie pup is doing very well eliminating outside; however, she will come into the house and almost immediate sometime pee on the carpet even if watched closely.  She doesn't give any warning or signs and has been checked out by a vet for bladder and urinary tract infections.  She has never been punished physically for accidents, and is always highly praised for going outside, and this is getting frustrating.

I know dachsies are typically difficult to housetrain but I don't understand the reason for going outside and inside both.  Any helpful hints or ideas?

It doesn't matter to her where she goes, so she needs to learn that it isn't OK to pee indoors.  If you cannot watch her every second then she needs confining to an area with a floor that is easy to clean until she gets the idea.

Often pups that have too much freedom within the house don't make the connection between the house being their denning area therefore to be kept clean.  Carpet is more likely to retain her scent and encourage her to wee there again.

How old is she and are you still taking her outside and seeing her go, or relying on her going out herself.  Remember most pups don't have real voluntary control until about 5 months so if distracted or too far from the place they are supposed to go they will simply have to go where they are.

How old is she? Some puppies do take a long time. My munsterlander puppy still has accidents in the house on occasion, she is 7 months old  ;) This weather does NOT help with house training. I don't like going outside with the dogs in this, so how do they feel when they are dragged out in it? Pups mum will wait until she is bursting before she will step out of the door. Don't push it, she will get there. :)

I can imagine having such short legs will make it even less pleasant to go out.

I think this is wise advice already given and to me it does sound like a training issue.  But I must say, any experienced dachsie breeder is likely to tell you dachsies are rarely 100% house trained.  We have one lad who is particularly bad - the others not so. Good luck!

Well, my little Muffin (mini-wire) was 100%, I don't remember it being difficult either. He didn't much like the rain, but who does? He was one of the best dogs we have ever owned! Perhaps we were lucky, bless him!
