I'm surprised that beagles are top of the list. The one I used to walk was a pain in the neck for disappearing, and put me off the breed for life - but she wasn't noisy :)

The others I agree with, spitz breeds in general can be horribly yappy, I'm surprised samoyeds aren't there. Shelties can be yappy, as can poodles..and terriers :D The working breeds that are listed I wouldn't have thought of as noisy, unless there is something that upsets them and they're guarding their property?

Yep I'm with you re the Beagles, and I quite forgot the excruciating Sammy bark, would drive me up the wall.  Samms definitely yap, but I would only apply yappy to small Spitz breeds the bigger ones either bark or in the case of sled dogs yodel or howl.

My breed are required to have a carrying bark so that a hunter can locate them and the Elg, but this should not be random and uncontrolled, but when they have a moose at bay they are to keep the barking up until the hunter arrives and would be expected to keep it up for an hour or more at hunting trials where the hunter doesn't actually shoot, but when trailing the Elg they are meant to be quiet, so an indiscriminately noisy dog is not wanted.

So in my view it is a training issue, if you know the breed are vocal then this area has to be addressed more than with a breed that hardly barks.

That would explain why neither of my breeds, Vallhunds or German Spitz, are not in the top 10  - when they definately should be :)

Well I have to agree, but it all depends on training.  MY breed are known for liking the sound of their own voices, and because I live in a suburban semi I train them not to bark unnecessarily or for prolonged periods.  Have even had people at shows comment on how quiet they are as they have met others who the owners simply let them bark.

As for GSD's kept out or untrained they sure are noisy I hear quite a few on my walks or even just sitting in the garden.

My next door neighbours Jack Russells yip and yammer and bark, and are the major cause of starting mien off, making the training much more necessary.

Oh definately!!  Dylan (Groen) screams like a banshee when he's excited and Storm (Mal.) meows like a cat.  What a combination!!  Unfortunately they teach my Staffys bad habits and they bark their heads off too!!

Love the "terriers" being classed as a single breed!!!

Anyone doubting that most terriers are noisy should go to the terrier benches at any champshow   the noise is unbelievable, we always know where to  find the Bedlingtons - it's the quietest part of the tent/shed :rolleyes:  they are more like hounds to me - only bark when required :)

I can't understand why Mini Schnauzers aren't no 1   to me they are really noisy and yappy.

Our terrier barked at the grass growing when we first had him :D - was surprised that they aren't higher up the list :) or maybe ours just likes the sound of his own voice far more than we ever do.

I must like gobby dogs, had a Dobie, have a Rottie and a staffie cross.

I agree Terriers should be number 1 though! My friends Patterdale barks and yaps at everything other than things he should bark at :rolleyes: If I throw a toy for my dog he goes nuts, if you talk in a high pitched happy voice he goes nuts, if me and my friend are playfighting he goes nuts, etc etc. When on walks if he sees someone he knows in the distance he howls and barks until he reaches them.

My Dobe on the other hand only really barks in the house when the door rings or if he hears/sees something suspicious outside. He does also bark at squirrels and rabbits when chasing them, and does occasionally do a high pitched scream when on lead if he sees a cat or if we're going somewhere he particularly loves, but thankfully that's about it!

Sorry my previous neighbours had a Westie and she was by far noisier than my collie - she would be out there yapping to the moon if there was nothing else to yap about!!!  

My neighbour 3 doors away has 3 Chihuahua & 1 Papillon   - they make a lot more noise than my 3 Pharaohs & 1 Greyhound.

Have noticed at shows that Dachs are quite vocal.
Portugese Podengo's are vocal too (am used to being next to them at Discover dogs).

Before I had Beardies, I had read that they are pretty vociferous!  Don't agree, the most gobby dogs I've owned are Chihuahuas!!

My Cavalier boy's pretty gobby, so are my friend's Cavs! :-D

I'm really surprised Samoyeds aren't on the list....I show them and they are incredibly noisy, many people are surprised with how yappy their bark is. I think my Cavalier would top that list though, she LOVES the sound of her own voice, she'll bark at anything - her favourite thing is barking when she sees an animal on the tv!

I have had rotties for 20 years, never, ever been noisy. Very quiet until they have to tell me someone is around. Never known it as a breed that barks unecessarily!!

I've a theory that the smaller dogs bark lots when they go into the garden to scare off anything dangerous before it realises how small they are :D :D :D  My mum's Cairn always did that and never got attacked by monsters in the gardn so it must work :D :D

On the way home from Crufts one year, we parked in a service station on the M5 near a van with Finnish Spitz in, there were at least 3 but it sounded like 30 and they didn't stop barking or pause for breath all the time I was there - about an hour    I've never heard such a racket before or since :D

Still laughing at Dill's comment.  Now I know why all the goblins and gremlins in my garden are nowhere to be seen.  It's my tiny dogs scaring them away!

Beagles are noisy in a funny way, those howls they do make me laugh!

You haven't parked next to my car then when I arrive at the woods to walk our youngest "terrierist" :D It is so embarrassing - I avert my eyes from other dog walkers during the 15 or so minutes it takes for him to be stop barking long enough for me to open the car crate. And even then it can take 6 or 7 attempts to get him out as I refuse to let him out until he is quiet. I am asking for earplugs from Father Christmas and a huge dollop of "Am I bovvered" attitude :D

I had a friend (now deceased) who took 6 Finnish Spitz to shows, adn they never barked on the benches or the car, but most do :D

Yes I remember how surprised I was with the Samoyed's having such a high pitched shrill bark.

Agree about the dobes, my boy only barks if there are birds or cats etc to bark at or the door rings, my bitch doesn't really bark (only to come in from outside!) But they are generally noisy especially my boy, he moans and groans when settling down to sleep and does a really noisy yawn too :-) My son is always laughing saying he is talking saying "I'm Blade I'm Blade" I'm convinced he thinks he is Dr Dolittle :rolleyes:

I have Shepherds now and I use to have a Chow and a Samoyed. I cannot believe that so much yapping can come from a dog so big as a Samoyed. My Chow could hardly ever be bothered to muster up anything sounding like a bark. It was almost a hmmmmph! LOL When they get going the sheps can be noisy, but no where near the samoyed!

this has seriously amused me - my neighbour complained how loud my boxer was when he spent his 1st day on his own,3 days after we got him, even though her dog makes his fair share of noise (yes, a real naggy neighbour - oh and the dog has calmed down now,surprise).so when i saw no 2 i had to laugh - cos she has a collie - and the other day when we said u have to give n take a little cos her dog made enough noise when left alone,she told me that her dog NEVER makes any noise....LOL...
