Topic Dog Boards / General / Question on business expenses as a breeder
- By LJS Date 28.11.07 09:04 UTC
Just thinking aloud so bear with me  :D

If you are a breeder it is prefered you show to prove you are trying to keep your lines to as near to the breed standard.

Ok so if you are registered as a breeder would you therefore class your expenses relating to travelling and preparing for shows a business expense or is it only directly relating to the breeding process eg stud fees and whelping equipment costs etc ?

The reason why I ask is that if you travel alot showing it can prove to be a very expensive 'hobby'. If it is though registered as business then could this be done ? The company wouldn't have to make a profit ie breed loads of litters etc as you could class the company as a R&D company for breeding dogs

Would like peoples views

I have friends who run a very successful boarding kennels and grooming business.  They also show, very very successfully!  Nearly all their showing expenses go down as business expenses as they class it as advertising.  Not sure about the breeding expenses though.

So if you didn't have the boarding kennels and grooming business would you still be able to do this I wonder ? Could you still class it as advertising as your kennel name would be visable when showing ?

I have no idea about that LOL.  I guess it all depends on how much you breed.  What would be classed as taxable, viable income through breeding?  How much would you have to make?  I have no idea.

You can run any business at a loss that is why I suggested running it as a R&D company :)

Yes you can claim most things even for clothes etc. Leads etc can be claimed for every year as can bowls. Vaccs, treatment, worming etc etc. Petrol to vets, ringcraft etc etc. You can claim anything to do with the dogs even their toys.
I have a friend who does this every year and so do most of her friends.
If breeding is done properly then in my opinion you are lucky to break even, unless you have large litters and no problems. Plus we do it for the love of it cos I never seem to get a wage packet:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
My last litter cost me £2760 in vets fees plus everything else on top.
