Due to the stud dog I had planned on using Saturday, eating a rabbit, whole, & subsequently having surgery to remove it late last night, I am now in a flap as he was my 1st & only choice for the bitch. This will be her last chance as she has missed twice and only comes into season once a year, she has just turned 4 so its now or never! i have one other choice, a 10 month old dog & wondered if anyone had (intentionally!) used a dog this young? Normally I would be 100% against it as I strongly believe in waiting to see a dog mature. However this pup is superb, and has the right lines for my bitch and would be a perfect match.......if only he were a two year old!!! Any suggestions......I have about 24 hours to make a decision.

Go for it Sam, I'm sure you know what your looking at & he should be fertile. Good luck and I hope he's keen. It is not the norm in our breed because we wait for hip scores but for a 10mth old to sire a litter is not I'm sure unheard of in fact I can think of 1 or 2 'accidents' that produced some lovely pups. Ja:)kie

Go for it Sam, and I wish you all the best and hope it works!!! :D

I am sure he is more than capable...he certainly shows a great deal of interest....its the "moral" side of it that worries me. In the breed there is no hips problem, and no scoring undertaken so that in itself not a problem. I have always believed in letting a dog mature, as much as anything, so you can see if any health problems rear their heads.....epilepsy and spondylitis being the main ones that I can think about for my breed. However there is no family history of either, and this would have been the dog I planned to use on the bitch pup I planned to keep from the litter if it had gone as planned, so effectively I am skipping one generation of my breeding plan! Still unsure....any more thoughts gratefully received.

Hi Sam, I prefer an 'old chap' too for the same reasons, but like Jackie, Phil and the others I'd go for it. If you want pups from your bitch, he's your best chance. You'd be doing him and his owners a favour, as your bitch is experienced. You know what's behind him and that it includes good genetic health, good conformation and lines that suit your own. To me that is morally very different from someone with less knowledge/experience of the breed using a maiden youngster. And being harsh about it, as she's missed twice before, she may not take this time. If she does take, if you're upfront with potential owners that the mating isn't the one you'd planned and keep an even closer eye on the pups than usual, I don't see an ethical problem.

I suppose your other choice might be to ask the vet about extracting a sample from rabbit gobbling dad and using AI. Don't know the ins and outs of getting a sample from a post-op dog (or even if its possible/advisable), or of the KC rules & regs at such a late stage tho'.

At risk of getting my head bit off if you can find no history of any health problems in his lines what harm will using him do He will definitely enjoy himself although yes he will be tired.:D Gillian
- By Sarah Date 19.09.02 17:05 UTC
Why don't you use his Father? :-)
- By sam Date 19.09.02 19:18 UTC
Hi Sarah, yes I had considered that, but he has been used the once at stud and has two bitches already booked for the winter & the breeder (one of my best friends) has a policy of 3 litters from her stud dogs, as we are such a numerically small breed, which I wouldn't argue with. She feels that as the other two have written bookings its only fair to honour them. She also feels that it would be ok to use his son.
- By Sarah Date 19.09.02 19:22 UTC
Hi Sarah, yes I had considered that

Twas just a thought :-) Shame it didn't help much :D
- By sam Date 19.09.02 19:19 UTC
I know what you mean, unfortunately health problems in my breed have a nasty habit of appearing from nowhere, hence my reservation.

Sam

What a nightmare for you - the best laid plans and all that.

I have been checking the KC web-site to see if there is any guidance there about a stud dog being over 12 months of age before the mating - but can't find anything - for bitch OR stud dog:(

I guess as long as the owner of the stud dog is content and it won't affect your ability to register etc then go for it. I know I wouldn't let my dogs be used that young but that's my personal preference and breed will also have a part to play.

Is there no dog from this pups immediate ancestery that you could use? or is the dam's pedigree important too?

Good luck anyway

Hi Sam

Typical boys isn't it !!! :D :D

I would go ahead and use the 10 month old boy :D :D

I have heard of puppies being sired by dogs as young as 7 months without any problems.

Good luck and let us know how everything goes :)

Sam,

Don't laugh at me commenting to this as I am and have no experience in breeding at all but just spent the last 10 mins trying to find an article I had read somewhere but it did say something along the lines that a dogs sperm ( blush) is the same state and condition as it were at 8 years old. It is out poor girls that give up the ghost as they are born with their eggs and don't produce anymore...so sounds OK..

Good luck and hope all goes well.

Well it didn't really go to plan....had 24 hours of trying with 10 month old, but no luck. I like to think of him still as a "virgin" but as my friend said....."virgin' on the bloody useless"!!!!!! Well we tried so thats the main thing. had to resort to plan B which was a nice red dog who has a had a couple of Res BIS & res CC's and hunts ok.....his conformation is ok, but his front not his best asset. Importantly for my bitch he has good length of foreface, lots of lip good length of leathers, & length of body as these are her slight failings. I think they will be fine. he is litter brother to the Ch. hound I originally booked for her, so the lines will be identical, he is just not quite such a nice hound. Time will tell, I shall keep you posted!
- By pamela Reidie [gb] Date 22.09.02 19:54 UTC
Good luck again Sam,

Fingers and toes crossed this time.. :-))

Pam
- By Sharon McCrea [gb] Date 22.09.02 19:58 UTC
Sorry the lad wasn't up to the job Sam, but can't help laughing at "virgin' on the bloody useless" :-).

Maybe the litter brother will do better by you than you expect. wasn't it GSDs where one German dog was a very big winner, but his brother was the one to pass on all the good points and ended up being more influential?
- By Pammy [gb] Date 22.09.02 20:38 UTC
Sam - sounds like my younger boy - he doesn't seem to have a clue either:D Nevertheless - you've got the same bloodline that you wanted so fingers crossed the pupr are all you hope for.
Good luck to you and your girl

I dont think its right using a 10 month dog as stud the same thing happened to a friend of mine she asked the vet and he didnt agree why couldnt you just wait or use another dog seems money driven to me
- By Isabel Date 24.09.02 20:29 UTC
Those of us that know Sam a little and the things she cares about will know that that is a ridiculous suggestion Dogs
- By Reefer [gb] Date 24.09.02 20:33 UTC
ROFALMAO:D (hope I got that right) DOGS - you really don't do any research into anything do you?
- By DOGS [gb] Date 24.09.02 20:36 UTC
What makes you think that
- By DOGS [gb] Date 24.09.02 20:37 UTC
Im only quoteing what the vet says unless your one yourself you may be able to match his views
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 24.09.02 20:48 UTC
Vets arn't God they don't know everything what harm is it going to do to the dog DOGS infact if you read the thread properly you will see he wasn't used in the end and your on here suposedly to learn.Well for your information stud dogs have to learn there job as well thats why its not recommended to use a novice dog on a novice bitch and some people will tell you that an older dog doesn't always know what to do
- By DOGS [gb] Date 24.09.02 21:00 UTC
I did read the thread I know that it was not a succesful mating I know vets no everything but there the most knowledgable people for pets welfare surely all that uni studies pays off
