Can anybody advise me how to stop my dog from jumping up and  chewing/tugging  the lead and my coat when out walking?.

Stop moving and stand stock still.  Only move again when the pup is calm.  A little quiet praise when she stops also, depends on just how excited she is.

Try to keep the led arm still when walking with the lead not trailing in her sight, same with your clothes wear ones that don't flap.

Practice the 'Leave' command in other situations and use it for this too.

If she starts close to home march straight back and give her a time out.

This is high spirits and excitment, you want to manage it not squash it completely.

Funny old thing my 3 year old girl has just recently regressed back to her puppyhood and has started ragging her lead.  It's good to have her in high spirits but really....................... :)

Coming back from the Vet with my Jozi (8) on her own yesterday, about a 20 minute walk she decided to give me the evil grin and wicked eye and tug the lead.  I think it was relief that it was a check up only (from her gum op).

Unfortunately we have to go back in the morning as she has had a large sebaceous cyst come up on her neck, tried warm compresses to encourage ti to come to a head, but no good.  I was worried about catching it with her collar so it is going to have to be lanced, drained and then the lining removed and a stitch or skin glue it closed.

It will be sedation or a local as I don't want her to have another GA.  Either it wasn't there when her Gum was done or we missed it, shame as could have killed two birds with one stone.

you could try spraying the lead with bitter apple.

My daughter's terrier pup used to do this so we got a lead that has a leather handle but a chain lead and he no longer bothers :)

I trained a dog at a rescue centre that was terrible for jumping up and biting the lead when he was first taken out of his kennel. If your dog is getting close to your hands or is hard to hold onto there is a trick. If you can find a post or tree position the dog on one side with you on the other wrapping the lead behind the post/tree. You can use the post to prevent getting caught by exhuberant jaws. Does that make sense? easy to show, harder to describe in writing. Then I did what Brainless already suggested, just stood there like another post. :-D When he settled we could carry on.
