Topic Other Boards / Foo / CATS URGENT HELP NEEDED
- By Lea Date 23.11.07 21:46 UTC
Just had a phone call; from a mate.
Quick background.
She took a cat in 4-5 months ago that her mate couldn't keep as he was made homeless.
He said she had been neutered but had kittens a week ago.
For the last 4-5 months she has been ill. She was out away for the first time today and was fine. The cats are making her ill.
The mother cat is an outside cat, but I told her to keep her in as she would get pregnant very quickly after having kittens so she is now keeping her in. The mother cat is very subdued and has diorreah, so have told her is she doesn't improve by the morning she needs to take the cat to the vet.
BUT she realises she cannot keep them.
It wasn't as bad when the cat was hardly ever in. But now she has a cat and 4 kittens in the house all the time it is making her worse.
I need help finding somewhere for them to go ASAP as in a few days BUT I want someone that is highly recommended and not just anyone.
And can cats get annoyed with not going out???
HELP PLEASE ASAP
We are near Grantham Lincs :)

I'm no help as I'm too far North but if the cat is used to getting out all the time & is now restricted, you may find she's not the happiest bunny in the world.   Had you been closer, no hesitation in taking them, it would've given my day some structure.

And the cat needs to go to the vets if she has diarrhoea, it could be an infection she could pass onto the kittens.

I did  suggest she might just be fed up with being locked inside,. And have told mate that she has to get her to the vets in the morning if she is no better. I would have her until the kittens are older but I work longer hours than would want to have to look after week old kittens And Ric is severaely allergic to cats to the extent he wouldnt come here so thats no go :( (also the dogs would eat them1!!!)
Really want something sorted ASAp so she doesnt give them up to anyone.

I have 3 cats & 3 dogs so no-one bats an eyelid here!   If she does take her to the vets ask about having the dam spayed too.

She has talked to the local cats protection about having that done but it cant be done until she stops feeding.
Local cats protection is 30 miles away.
Thankyou Christine for replying. Just hope I can sort things out for her ASAP :)

The big problem with taking in moggies, and especially ones that have been outdoors, is that it is actually very expensive for anyone to do, if they have, or ever plan to, have other cats. They cannot be mixed with other cats until they have been blood tested clear for FeLV and FIV, and when you add to that cost the cost of neutering, vaccination, worming and any other treatment that may be needed, the costs will often be a couple of hundred or so. So the best bet may well be to try to find a rescue that will help. I don't know the area I'm afraid.

Any cat can get used to not going outside, just given time. I have two rescues myself that were outdoor cats and they are very happy to stay indoors only. If anything they have no interest at all in trying to run out, which some of the pedigrees occasionally try, because they know from experience how much nicer it is indoors where it is warm and food is available at set times! :D

This cat has been used to going outside but does cme in more regular now. And mate only kept her in when I told her she could get pregnant before the kittens are weaned.
Problem I have got is to get her and the kittens rehomed ASAP.
I wish I could have them but I am not in the position to so have to find somewhere else ASAP.

Contact your local vets and ask them if they have any cat home numbers. I've had a few foster homes ring me asking to have my kittens

I tld her not to ask the vets as have heard so many bad things come from vets telling people of places :( Probably me being over sensative
I have an ex teacher that dotes on cats and used to be in the CPL but set up her own rescue with another ex teacher a few years ago. If I dont get anything else I will go and see her tomorrow (but not confident going knocking on someones door asking for help when I havent spoken to them since I was 9 months pregnant 12 1/2 years ago :o

I suppose it depends on the vets. Obviously I've been in touch with mine quite a bit over the last few days and they have been brilliant with advice. They helped me sort out everything I needed to know, including putting an advert up in their surgery. Lots of people have contacted me from cat sancturies etc (must have a kitten waiting list!!).

Well she is trying to carry on with them for the sake of 12 weeks.
But the mother has stopped eating or drinking even though she has tried fresh boiled chicken So she is taking her to the vets at 4.10.
Please keep your fingers crossed she will be ok :)

I would definately speak to the vets, they often have people on a list looking for kittens and puppies so they would be my first point of contact then any other vets in the area and any other rescue organisations. The problem with advertising them in pet shops (and i'm probably going to make myself sound very unpopular here) is that you don't always get the best homes (that doesn't mean everyone just some people)

Oh and also don't advertise them as free (if they are) as this gets anyone and everyone ringing people up but again alot of those people won't have really thought about taking another animal on as its free!

Good luck it must be very hard for her!

She has Mastitis.
Dont know anything else as mate has had a major family problem but I will update as soon as I find out more.
Is there any advice I can give to help with mastitis in cats??
