Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / why do dogs eat rabbit poo?
- By saga Date 21.11.07 19:54 UTC
:confused:My dog has a fettish for eating rabbit poo...Is there any reason for this...When she meets her two border terrier friends they run heads down scooping up as much rabbit poo as they can...yuk!:eek:

Because they can't catch the rabbit   Seriously dogs will eat most kinds of manure, probably for trace vitamins and minerals or undigested nutrients.  Just remember to keep the worming up to date for all poo eaters.

Rabbit poo is high in nutrients.  Dogs will gobble up Guinea Pig droppings for the same reason.

Mine smell the rabbit droppings andcatch the rabbit instead.
They do like cat poo though, seem to thick of it as a very tasty doggy treat !!!

Ours likes cat poo as well she will follow me to the bin when I empty the litter tray expecting a nice little treat and looking very disappointed when she doesn't get one!  We have to keep the litter where she can't get at it or there would be no poo to empty

Also cat litter can be harmful, and there is always some stuck to any poo.  Also very few cat owners worm their dogs so I am always aware of thsi aspect when my lot dive under hedges when walking them to grab cat poo. yuk.

I'm a little confused by this statement. Do you mean people who own both cats and dogs dont worm their dogs,or most cat owners dont worm their cats?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.11.07 08:36 UTC
From my experience most cat owners don't worm.  So a dog scarfing up the poo deposited by the neighbourhood cats may also be taking in their worms.

For some strange reason cats are sen by many average folk as clean animals and dogs as dirty.

Cats get taken to the Vet less often by most folks, many never vaccinating them, so don't get told/reminded  to worm as much as dog owners.

I think also cats are much more difficult to get tablets or medicine down them and so alot of people don't worm etc so they don't get multiple cat stratches :) Also a lot of cats know if crushed tablets or liquid wormers have been put in their food.

A towel and rubbing the throat is my prefered way of getting tablets down :)

I now my Dads cat only gets wormed if I do it.  They started usign a flea and wormer all in oen spot on lst year when she got fleas, so hopefuly this will be kept up.
- By LJS Date 23.11.07 08:56 UTC
Do they do a spot on joint one  I didn't know that :) I will have to find out about that, I presume one you can only get from a vet or can you get it online ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.11.07 09:00 UTC
Stronghold Spot-on kills fleas and roundworms. Not tapeworms though. And it's prescription only.
- By LJS Date 23.11.07 09:01 UTC
Oh well back to the towel method :)

Yes my girls are the same when the litter tray is emptied

I always think rabbit poo is the doggy equivalent to chocolate raisins for us ! Yummy :D

Guinea pig poo is a favourite for ours. When I take her out of the run, the dog jumps in to clean up:rolleyes:

Oh yes my dog adores our rabbits and guinea pigs, they keep giving her treats, she thinks they are marvellous. I used to think it was a bit yucky but have learnt that the droppings are actually quite nutritious for her so they can carry on being the best of friends!!

mine i swear actually turns into a hoover:eek: and sucks up the grass too whilst trying to vacuum up every bit of rabbit poo in sight!

hi mine both eat rabbit poo, but  earlier in the year when we were at the lakes mine kept fetching my sheep poo, he wanted me to throw it for him.

With all this talk of natural feeding, what could be more natural?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.11.07 08:41 UTC
This is probably why dogs in bygone days that were fed on scraps did well, they supplemented theri diets by scavenging, possibly huntign small animals, eating roadkill and getting micronutients from manure.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.11.07 08:47 UTC
Roadkill has only really become prevalent since the huge increase in motor traffic since the second world war.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.11.07 08:55 UTC
Take your point and loose dog woudl = roadkill
- By stanyer21 [gb] Date 23.11.07 09:14 UTC
just remembered we came across the tail of a rabbit once and the skin. both my dogs had an end each of the skin and were fighting over it. i took that off them and my dog then went picked up the rabbits tail and swallowed it.

Rabbit poo, horse poo, sheep poo, and lovely sticky cowpats are a special delicacy.
