a lot of feeding threads point towards people feeding their dogs much more naturally than before eg BARF or at least containing some raw foods, I wondered how many of you are following a 100% raw diet yourselves or working towards it as we too were made to eat raw.(seeds nuts fruit veg) or is it true that good owners care more about their dogs then themselves:cool:

I feed my dogs a raw diet but don't eat a totally raw diet myself.  I do eat fresh raw fruit and some raw vegetables but tend to follow the practices first started by early man when fire was discovered and cook my meat before I eat it :)

I do however eat as healthily as I can - 90% of my food is made from scratch. I try to avoid additives, colourings and flavourings wherever possible and don't usually eat very much in the way of processed food - the same as I do for my dogs really :)

Well I don't eat much of my food raw,but I started having raw veggie juices(apple, carrot, spinach, cucumber, spinach, peppers, cabbage etc) and was amazed how much more energetic I felt after having one,its something to do with the enzymes apparently so I always start the day with one.I also soak the dog's dry food in this blend(minus the apple)and they seem to be more lively too.The thing is,quite often in the evening,I can't be bothered to juice anything for myself but I do make the effort for the dogs!:cool:I don't feed raw meat to the dogs though as it gave one of my dogs gastroenteritis so am a bit scared to try it again.

Its not the apple that is a problem its the pips they contain cyanide so shouldnt be fed in any quantity

As far as i'm aware apple is fine to give dogs.Just avoid the seeds which contain cyanide.

phew:cool: thank goodness its just the seeds! i was so worried then, and don't laugh but i gave it to her cored and sliced!!(mind only cause i was eating it that way)

Marie, the only reason that I leave out the apple is that my sheltie(the one who had gastroenteritis with the raw meat)has quite severe food intolerances which resulted in stomach pain.I e mailed Burn's nutrition and they advised that I didn't give her fruit juice(including apple) as it might irritate her stomach. With a "normal" dog it might well be fine though.Sorry to get you worried!I have to admit I didn't know about the seeds being harmful-I've been juicing the apples whole for myself!

A dog would have to consume several kilos of apple seeds to die from cyanide poisoning.  I, my dogs, my daughter and my horses have eaten the WHOLE apple without dropping dead.

A dog is more likely to die of bloat from eating all the apples than having any ill effects from the apple pips which in any case are not in the state to cause cyanide poisoning!

Scaremongering does most people no favours.

As I stated the pips could be dangerous if feed in any quantity I don't see it as scaremongering to inform people that they do infact contain cyanide. Also to reassure the poster that asked that feeding apple as they had was perfectly safe.

Yep I do. I tried lots of different dry foods and my boy just stuck his nose up at them so now he eats raw meat and a few veg's thrown in. It was his 3rd birthday the other week and he had £15 of topside beef. Wow he loved that:cool:
He also gets the odd salmon and tuna steak which goes down well.

I think this has turned into a dog feeding thread:cool: are there any raw foodies out there I am genuinely interested, has anyone read the sunfood diet books?
