i am new here and need some advice.
My toy breed female had a c section 5 weeks ago and had 2 puppies sadly one didn't make it and we now have one left.

Our vet thinks she has epilepsy. she looks like she keeps having fits not a lot but she has had about 4 her head keeps rolling to one side and she falls on her back and she can't stand up.

Her tounge also sicks to the roof of her mouth a lot after eating.
our vet said she can't do anything about that, but we have been getting our nails and unsticking it and then putting a bit of water on it and that seems to help a bit.

We have hand reared her as the mum's milk has dried up,
has anybody else experienced this in a puppy so young if they did what did you do?

I haven't experienced it I'm afraid. But just a thought - is your breed one that's prone to liver shunts? I know that's also something that can cause fits in young puppies. Sorry I can't be more help.

thank you for replying so fast i think they are prone to liver shunts but i am just looking now for more information on this and if i am 100 per cent sure they are.
They are prone to some genetic anomalies, often neurological ones, such as epilepsy and seizure disorders.
Although i have had one with any health problems.
Am i allowed to say the breed of my dog on this site?

Usually you're not allowed to name your breed on breeding posts as it would count as advertising - but in this case I would say people might be able to help more if they knew the breed. I would PM the moderator and ask if it would be OK. :)

if the breed is prone to shunts, then were the parents both tested??? epilepsy has reared its head in my breed and so I have looked into familiar lines etc very very carefully over the years. its vital, in my experience, never to breed from anything thats fitted or if possible a sibling of anything thats fitted or produced a fitter.
if truly this baby puppy is fitting at this age, then in all honesty I can only think of one outcome. Likewise i wouldnt be breeding from either parent again.

thanks for replying i have just found out the breed isn't prone to liver shunts but there is a something called hypoglycemia with my breed.
There really isn't a lot of tests to be done on my breed only really heart tests and they are prone to patella luxation.

I have had my female dog spayed when she had the c section as i feel you shouldn't breed a dog again after having a c section.
The mum of the puppy has never had fits and the dad of the puppy again has never had a fit,
i have looked carefully into the lines and have contacted as many of the breeder as possible to see if any fits or seizures have occured before in the litters.

Both of the parents had a litter together before 2 years ago and none of the puppies had any fits or other problems as i did keep one of the puppies out their first litter as so far all well and good she is an excellent very healthy dog.

I have also contacted other people who have used the same stud and have asked them about any problem with the puppies and none of them have had any problem which i am very pleased about.
But this leaves me at a bit of a dead end as to why our puppy has come out with this problem.

I will pm and ask if i can say the name of my breed, i do intend to keep this puppy if she survives and have her vet treated and spayed.
I don't think it would do anybody any good to sell an ill puppy and i need to know she is ok and getting the best care and treatmeant possible.
