Topic Dog Boards / General / SA testing in poodles!
- By Crazydoglady [in] Date 15.11.07 21:42 UTC
I asked my vet to test my poodle for SA and she just looked at me puzzled! Lol! She said she'd never been asked to test for it before and didn't know how to test for it. She asked would I ask the breed club what needs to be taken (skin scrape, bloods etc). At present I can't get onto the breed club forum to ask so thought I would ask here! Lol! (I thought it was done using a skin sample taken by a puncture thing but I'm probably wrong!) Not really very happy for them to do it if they have never done it before though!
I also asked about hip scoring which they don't do so might just go to another vet and hope they know what I'm talking about! Lol!
Thanks
Holly

the most important test for poodles is the eye test (SRA) , not sure why you want a hip score as this is not listed as normally a problem in this breed

bedruthen I can tell you now that it is a worry in the breed.  Looking at the latest BVA scores (unfortunately only showing up to Jan 06) there is no reason for the Poodle breeders to be complacent.  There are scores in the 40's.

Just looked Standard Poodles have a score of 4-74   Not very good is it   Min's 6-58.  Actually rather bad, when you think only 21 Min's were scored up to that point.

These scores are worse than my breed and we require that anyone breeding scores their dogs.  Standard Poodles really need to be scoring with scores like that, although over 400 have been scored up to that date!

Yep same here our breeds worst score is lower than the Poodles and all our breeding stock are required to be scored.  Ours gives a pretty real picture as roughly 20% of the total registered with the KC are now scored.

I think all breeds should be hip scored as it is a canine problem not just certain breeds, even wolves and Wolf crosses get HD.

I thin I would be changing Vets if they are not confident to do X-rays for HD scoring.  You would think Vets would be encouraging owners to Health test their dogs.  I have also found them to be seriously lacking in this department, especially when asking about eye testing.

They need a skin biopsy - a punch biopsy is fine.

ETA - I would imagine your vets have done skin biopsies before, even if not for testing for SA! But it might be worth finding someone you have more confidence in.

Yea I'll try another vets then. I was very suprised that they weren't really encoraging me to get health tests, she more or less told me not to bother!
Am def going to get her hip scored, eyes tested and SA tested.
Thanks everyone!

Good on you.  Even if you are not planning to breed the health tests are worthwhile as if a problem is picked up at least you can adjust their lifestyle to minimise the impact, or treat the problem where possible.
