Hi, I have a litter all is going well except one of the pups have colic. I have been giving her a few drops of infacol before each feed. But she is still screaming out. I have tried rubbing her tummy and carrying her around.
They are 8 days old . Does any one have any ideas on how to help her.

Thanks
Monique

I take it that you are hand rearing the pups?  If the pup is in this much distress, I would contact the vet.  Or have you done so and that's why you're using the infacol (not too sure what that is - a remedy for colic-y babies?)

If you are hand rearing - are you pee-ing and pooping the pups?

i had a whole litter with colic once. vet recomended gripe water and 2 and half mls of calpol every 4 hours, it helped a bit.  i would ask vet for the dose, i would think 5mls (250mg paracetamol).

Not hand rearing the pups, The mum is doing this all by her self. Infacol is a human remedy for colic but can be used on pups.
I am pooin the pups as the mum will wee them but has not taken to the poo bit.
I did take the pup to the vets to be checked out to confirm colic. The vet just advised infacol and small feeds, so putting her on the front teats to slow down her feeding as she is very greedy. Carrying the pup around when s is screaming as it settles her a bit the mum was getting distressed and stopped eating.

As your having to poo the pups yourself are you sure the pup isnt constipated?
Its amazing how much can build up behind if they arent emptied properly that may also be why she is crying.

Wont' the mum poo them herself ?  I found a great trick.  Put some bio yoghurt on their little bums and I am sure she will start to poo them herself.  It worked wonders for me !!  Takes a few times till she gets the hand of it but after that she'll be cleaning their bums every half an hour.  Mine were sooooooo clean after she learned that !!

I had a colicy pup and same as earlier post gripe water ,belly rub make sure pup goes to the toilet after feed and put her onto your shoulder and rub her back as you would a baby with wind.
after pup slowed down feeding and was weaned it passed .

good Luck

She just dosn't like the poo on her tongue, never seen her look to disgusted. I have tried to encourage her but she just looks at me to say you do it.

Hihi know what you mean.  My first time mum was like that too for about two or three days until she got the hang of it with the yoghurt.  She always started to clean them and then when she came to the proper poo she just looked as if to say "How disgusting".  Didn't take her long though to get on with the job herself.  Now that the puppies go themselves she is still in there trying to make them go.  She can't quite understand why they manage to go themselves now.  It's best to get her used to it though.  Try insisting with the yoghurt.  I'm sure she'll get used to it after a few days if not even before.  If not you are going to have even more work than you will normally have, and I can advise you that you will have enough to do without having to get them to go too. :eek::eek:

I had a very colicky puppy in my first litter, even ended up at the Vets at 3 in the morning as I was so panicked. Just used the Infacol and plenty of winding and eventually grew out of it. Very frightening isn't it. I mean you hear about this 'gulling' noise that seriously ill puppies make and to me it sounded awfully similar. Thank goodness it was only wind.!

I kn ow this subject is serious but the thought of your looking at you in a way that says 'do it yourself' really made me chuckle. Seriously, hope everything gets sortedbitch

My Lexi was not wnating to clean bums the first day and was realy disgusted.  I jsut kepot sticking them under her nose and used baby wipes to ensure they were in fact empty and claen.  she was fien after a day ro so.

They really do look at you in that way though !!  It's like they're saying ...  OK I've done my bit and now it's your turn !!  I'm sure the colic will get itself sorted out though.

I actually have one bitch who looks really disgusted if she goes to the park and there is some poo in her walkway.  Haven't bred her yet and haven't decided if I will yet, but I can just imagine her when she has to start cleaning bums.  Maybe I'm wrong but don't think so...  She even lifts one of her back legs up when she goes to have a pee just in case her foot gets wet !!

Sometimes puppies are so greedy that they get so much wind inside their little tummies !!  It's not so easy to get it out but all you can do is persist.  IT is a thing which usually sorts itself out though.

Yet i have one bitch who still cleans up after her children no matter what i do to try and prevent it - her children are 5 and 9 years old!!

"She even lifts one of her back legs up when she goes to have a pee just in case her foot gets wet !!"

Actually this is dominant/confident marking behaviour from bitches.  My Alpha girl started doing this after her first litter and her granddaughter who I suspect will be the next alpha eventually does the same now on occasion.

What yours is most likely doing is marking over a place another bitch or dog has peed.

I'm sure you are right but I have a girl who lifts her foot, and it really is just that, so that her foot does not get wet. if it does, or one does, she nearly falls over trying to avoid it :D
