Hi, has anyone got any information on giving Entire Male Dogs hormone injections/drugs to supress their sex drive? I donot want him neutered as i have heared that it makes already nervous dogs, even worse! and my dog is VERY! nervous. He has just turned a year old and seems to be so pumped of hormones.

-Do vets supply this service?

-How much is it per injection/drug and how often is it given to the dog?

-Does it have nasty side effects, if so what kind of side effects?

Thankyou

"Does neutering a dog change its behaviour?"

I think that very much depends on the age and disposition of the dog at the time of neutering.

As both our dogs were very young when neutered - DogsTrust policy is to have all their rehomed dogs neutered and thus puppies rehomed by them are subject to a contract to be neutered at 6 months old - I can't honestly say that I could attribute any changes in my dogs to being neutered. There are changes but these may be due to their natural development, training, socialisation etc.

You're quite right to think that castration can make certain nervous dogs worse, and in these cases castration can be a mistake. There is an injection called Tardak which can be given to entire dogs and is supposed to mimic the effects of castration for four to six weeks. It's not without side-effects though, but it would be worth discussing with your vet.

He'll grow out of it, most male dogs do and he's at the very worst stage now for raging hormones. It would also be the worts possible time to neuter a nervous dog, so if you're going to do it, wait at least anther 6 months. I have used Tardak in the past and found it made no difference at all.

Neutering doesn't necessarily remove all sex drive, either, even if it normally makes it a bit less.It varies from dog to dog. I have a male neutered dog that was neutered as early as 4 ½ months. Every time I have a btich in season he will mate and even tie, so it's made no difference to him at all.

CSJ dog foods have a herbal remedy that can help to calm dogs sex drive down a bit... contact them to find out.

I've not voted because I think it varies from dog to dog! Some it makes no difference, some get more nervous, some calm down.... Tardak is an injection that's meant to mimic the effects of castration and block testosterone - my flat coat had it to see if it would stop him humping people. It made precisely no difference to that, but he can be slightly nervous-aggressive to other dogs (specifically my other dog) and it made him a million times worse... (hence no castration ;) ).

I've never known polls to work on this forum :D

I didn't vote either as a lot will depend on the time a dog is castrated and how dominant/submissive they are.
