Hi all, thanks for the help on my other post, just need some advice AGAIN. When i put a collar on Holly she sits and scratches at t and eventually whines. Should i build it up over time or just put it on? I trired giving her a treat when i put it on but once it had gone she started scratching at it.

Hi, I normally put collar on pup when I know I am around to just keep an eye on things, they will scratch at it as it feels different to them, but she will get used to it.
Perhaps try putting the collar on her, not too tight, but not to loose, and then take her mind off it by playing with her, she will soon get used to the collar.
With my dogs I don't keep their collars on all the time, only when we go for walks and then when we get back I take them off. :)

I put collars on my pups when they start to go to their new homes at 8 weeks.  those still here get to wear theirs while I supervise, but taken off when I can't watch them as they can get chewed.

Once down to last two or three pups they pretty much have them on all the time and those I keep wear them from then on for the rest of their lives.

Yes there are safety arguments for and against this.

Mine went mental when we put his on, we left it on for a few minutes at a time but after a couple of days we hardened our hearts and left it on and he did forget about it.  It did take him a day or two though to be completely used to it.

Hi

My dog didn't like the collar when she was a puppy and someone on this forum gave me the advise to give a little tuna when I put the collar on.   The collar very soon became a great thing to have round the neck as it meant a great treat is coming.

Its like most things with puppies, perseverance is the key they will be scared (not all i know!) of something new but they will get used to it. Once they do its your decision whether to keep it on in the house or just for outdoor use.
