Topic Dog Boards / General / How many dogs have you walked at once??
- By Gemini05 Date 09.11.07 11:13 UTC
I have three large breed dogs, one of them is very well behaved when out, one is a monster and I have to use a Halti and the youngest is still learning but is very good (better then the other one!).
Usually I take the naughty one out first, come back and take the other two, I am very tired after doing this as I also walk my kids to school and walk back home twice a day! I would take the dogs down to the school but do not like to leave them outside the grounds on their own and my children are too young to meet me at the gate.
So anyway, I have now started to walk all three together, and is working out quite well, we have been lucky so far as we have not come across any other dogs until we get to the fields, my dogs are not aggressive but love to play and meet other dogs!! And with three dogs times 8 stone each I have no chance!!
We meet friends over the fields which is so nice, mostly Staffies and everyone enjoys the walk.
So how many dogs have you walked at once and what size / breed??
- By Brainless [gb] Date 09.11.07 11:21 UTC
I have walked up to 7 of my breed but five regularly.  Difference being that these were all about three years apart in age with only the youngest to worry about as regards pulling to see a cat etc.

On the other hand I could not walk more than two Dobes or GSD at once.  Have walked two dobes and one of my older ones.

I would say you do not want to be walking more weight on lead than your own.

6 -Golden sized. But I will never do it again. I find as I don't have 6 pairs of eyes, it's too difficult to keep an eye on everyone. Hence if I am on my own I never walk more than 2 now. (I.e. my rule is 2 dogs per person.) It's nicer for them as well as my walks are also able to be training sessions then.

Two Cavaliers many years ago - but now that I'm much older and have 2 labs  I walk them separately. I tried once to take them together and ended up flat on my face, holding on to their leads for dear life, when they saw another dog...so I've never dared to try again. Their combined weight is more than mine, in fact.

I walk 5 setters but then I walk in a woods that is practically deserted/private.

The most I walk if going elsewhere and likely to meet other dogs is 3 so I know I can keep a better eye on them!  I find its just not worth it nor a pleasant walk if I have more than 3!!

ive only walked 3 staffys round the park my two and my grandmothers dog i dont usually like to take all three round even tho each is extremely well behaved and always come back and sit on my feet when called back its just sometimes other dog owners see 3 staffys they put their dogs back on the lead or pick them up i know its not their fault as they dont realise what their temprement is like but surely they should see sense as im not goin to let 3 staffys run off lead round the park if they were capable of attacking another dog

I have walked 5 (2 Dobes, 2 Goldies and a Sussex) together, but only do this if they are all on headcollars, no way could I manage on normal collars. I now walk in shifts, Hattie is mental so goes on her own, Charlie is ancient so goes alone, then the other 3 go together. Esme will be out and about next week so that will be another outing, although I might take her with Charlie from time to time.

I walked all four of mine just now, up the woods - I don't usually do that on-lead during the day though.  I will do it first thing - to walk them I have to get up at stupid o'clock and there's never anyone around then anyway, so i can get away with having the four on lead then.  But only with two haltis and a halti harness (none for Opi as she walks nicely!).  During the day I vary it - sometimes it's Soli and then the other 3, sometimes two and two.  Starting Monday it'll be two on-lead, then one on a longline up the park then the other the same, to work on recalls, and rotating which dogs get what each day.

I did walk all four on lead the other day - but they were absolute swines!  They did good when two yorkies started yapping at them, but I'd managed to persuade them to back away down another street a little - it is risky, as if Soli kicks off at a dog, River may well join in, which will start Remy off.  Opi will look at the, all like they're stupid, which is a good thing - just those three have a total weight of 80kg, with Opi as well it's around 110kg!  I will say that I can actually hold them if they pull, just about, but it is a risk so I don't usually do it.

I walk all 5 of mine together (get some strange looks!!), 2 BSD's, 2 SBTs and a SBT cross.

7 is the maximum I've ever walked.  My 6 (5 RRs and a mutt) in one hand and my friend's visiting (and spoilt!) RR in the other :) :)
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 09.11.07 16:21 UTC
I walk all my 5 Goldens together. The problem is with watching them all when they go off in different directions to do a p**, now that takes some watching! However, when I see any dogs coming on the park I put at least two on leads so that they don't all rush over to say hello.

12!  Pharaohs, Hamiltons and Cresteds.  I used to walk them all together - 6 on lead and 6 off at any one time, then they'd swap over half way.  Of course that was on private land ;)  I do walk all five of mine together now on public land unless we go down to the canal. The Pharaohs hate the dirt track and the water so there it's just the Collies and the Grand and the Pharaohs go to the fields instead.

i walk 12 together without problems, but wouldnt care to do it somewhere where the public have general access. However we do take the pack out (20 couple) on the lanes in the summer:cool:
- By Merlot [in] Date 09.11.07 20:14 UTC
I walk my three together every day, but most if the time it's off lead. We walk in the fields and drive there then park in the secure lane and I can just let them out to run free, the car is parked inside my secure back compound as well so they just jump in. If we meet horses or cows they go on lead but it's pretty rare at 7.30 am :rolleyes:My friend walks with me with her JRT and if she is away I have all four, I do walk all three on road walks once or twice a week and with their black dog collars on I can manage them even if a CAT should appear  They don't tend to pull to much if they don't meet anything!!!
They are really good in company or in the park and have never rushed up to other dogs, they often just ignore them or have a passing sniff. I think i'm lucky as they are all dog friendly.:cool:
:eek:Twenty couple of hounds must be an impressive sight Sam.

I thought how many walked at once meant on lead.  I don't drive so have to get to any off lead walking area on foot which in itself will be 20 minutes or more each way.  To do this it isn't just the fact the dogs may pull, but the room they take up on the pavement.
- By Gemini05 Date 09.11.07 22:13 UTC
well my walk today went well yet again!

The two girls walked nicely, and my youngest too, we walk for about 3 mins before I reach the woods and let one of the girls off who I can control with commands, she reminds me more of a Border Collie sometimes!
THen I walk a further 10 - 15 mins before I reach the fields where they all have a good free run, well being the breed mine are the tend to have a few sniffs then stay at my side most of the walk!
I also walk 20 - 25 mins each way to take my kids to and from school so you would think I was  so fit!!!

I did mean how many dogs have you walked at once on leads, but these replies have been very interesting ! :D :D

>I did mean how many dogs have you walked at once on leads

5 dalmatians - total weight of about 125 kg ... about double me!
- By mygirl [gb] Date 09.11.07 23:19 UTC
With a large breed it would be pretty stupid not to pre-empt a situation if need arises..

We take all ours to the beach if hubby is home otherwise its 2 walks you took the dogs on you take the consequences to us... i nor my husband couldnt forsee nor deal with an aggresive dog which ours as a pack will retaliate.. for that reason its seperate walks..

I walked 2 GSD's together once- never again- we took a short cut up a back alleyway which is just for access really behind some houses and an ignorant man came driving up (not supposed to) so I pulled the dogs into the side so he could get passed- he decided he wasn't waiting for me to pull them in and drove past anyway clipping Kassies back end as he did!  I shouted after him then he got out started giving me a load of verbal and followed me down the street like a curb crawler shouting abuse at me all I the way down!  I just stopped and phoned OH to run round and get us- I was very shook up!  He was shouting asking me 'who the f**k did I think I was- a bl**ding farmer or something walking them things like that'.  Obviously at the time I didn't think to get his reg no, I was too busy trying to keep calm so the dogs didn't get edgy.  Next time though I would make sure I got the reg no.... hindsight eh :-(

Oh sorry on lead - that would be 4 setters but again it isn't for very far thankfully!!!
- By briedog [gb] Date 10.11.07 07:55 UTC
walked 6 with h/o

but in the week it me walking them two then 3 have gone down to 5 now.it would have been 2 and 2  and 2 to give time to each of them out side the house as well.
- By sam Date 10.11.07 08:54 UTC
on leads......well thats rare as i fail to see the point....but....no more than 3 or 4....my breed dont do "heel"
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.11.07 08:57 UTC
Roads and recall Sam, some of us don't live in the wide open spaces

Mine are on lead for more of the time than off when going for a walk, especially in the winter, when I choose to road walk than risk breaking my neck in the mud.
- By pavlova [gb] Date 10.11.07 11:16 UTC
I only walk one of my GSDs at a time on lead now for reasons Barbara has already mentioned mud etc . I have a dog who is a professional puller even with a dogmatic on and will defend me to the end if a loose dog runs up to me .
I always walk the oldest dog alone anyway when they get to ten years old so they are not under any preasure to keep up with the younger dog.
I probably could walk two of them together but why run the risk of geting in a fight or pulled over.
- By zarah Date 10.11.07 18:06 UTC
Gemini05, did you try the Black Dog headcollar in the end? Just being nosey
- By Gemini05 Date 10.11.07 21:22 UTC
Hi Zarah, yes I did try the head collar, took me ages to fit it on properly!! it is good, but I seem to keep using my old halti as it is easier to put on xx
- By malwhit [in] Date 10.11.07 15:03 UTC
The most I have walked is 4 - a Jack Russell, Pembroke Corgi, GSD and Rhodesian Rhidgeback. The last two (and their owner) were staying with me for a few months and they were all bitches who got along fine.
- By munrogirl76 Date 10.11.07 15:25 UTC
Most is two - on lead or off. Haven't got the confidence or experience to manage more. And even combined weight of 60kg of dog has some pulling power, even though I weigh somewhat more. ;)
- By sara1bee [gb] Date 10.11.07 20:32 UTC
i walk 2 off lead in the park but have to drive there, if street walking i can only handle one. they are only standard schnauzers but i have been pulled over flat on my face when they saw a squirell! they are very strong dogs, i would use a face halter but they would spend all their time rubbing faces on the floor to get it off. does anyone have a dog that hates face halter that ever got used to it?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.11.07 21:11 UTC

>does anyone have a dog that hates face halter that ever got used to it?

Yes - but you have to introduce it properly. If it's just put on and then the dog expected to walk with it, there'll be problems. You start by putting it over the dog's muzzle, giving a treat, praising and immediately removing it. A few minutes later you repeat that. After a few sessions during the day you should be able to clip it on before you reward and remove. Then you progress to clipping it on when you feed the dog and removing it afterwards. Once the association of headcollar = Good Things is established you can start putting it on during the day at other times, and playing games. Headcollar = Fun! This is the stage when you can have the dog wear the headcollar when you go for walks - but don't attach the lead to it yet. It'll be a few more days of building pleasurable associations before you start using it 'properly'. And you never pull on the headcollar - all pressure is applied and released by the dog.
- By ClaireyS Date 11.11.07 00:52 UTC
I cant get one of mine used to a head collar no matter how hard I try.  I have tried everything but he hates anything near his face and would rather stay home even with the gate wide open than go for a walk with it on.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 11.11.07 01:15 UTC
I only walk 2 at a time it would be pretty silly to walk more , as much as my dogs are ok its others i worry about if they come upto mine a combined weight of 25 stone isnt a good situation to be in..

I do take them off lead to the beach with 4 danes with OH but never alone i couldnt possibly control them if the need arose.. we get many little dogs attacking them and we have one problem dane who will retaliate and unfortunately the others will join in (pack mentality at times) so its the best way we find to split them up..
