My bitch had a litter of pups 11 days ago she had kennel cough and blocked anal glands whilst pregnant and now has an ear infection not eating well either and been sick today. shes on ear drops and Noroclav antibiotics ive been really careful with hygiene as i have other dogs ,she is in a room on her own with her pups . What id like to know is one of the pups tonight has swollen eyes they havent opened yet but it doesnt look right to me , ive had pups before and havent come across this before ,any advice would be appreciated as im quite worried would it be the tablets the bitch is on or is it an infection. gonna phone the vet tomorrow Thanks in advance
My girl had an ear infection prior to whelping last year and my vet prescribed ear drops, after reading the label though and finding that it advised pregnant and lactating bitches should not have the drops, I took them back, my vet did not even know:rolleyes: . I came on the site and if you do a search hopefully you will find threads of other none medicated solutions for ear infections, safe for a lactating bitch to use.
The manufacturers advise us not to use these products for a reason, I suggest that you read the labels of all medications you have been given to check they are ok with lactating bitches, vets are not always up to spec on such things.
The pups problem may be completely unrelated, I hope that it is soon sorted. :-)

I then got some others, but unfortuantely they didn't clear things up and it came back with a vengenece after pups weaned. Took me weeks of cleaning, AB's and syringing to finally clear it up. I ahve never ever had an ear infection in any of my dogs before this. Ended up costing me £535 to treat it, not counting the initial treatment.
Please take your pups to the vet, or get a home visit. ASAP!!!
Don't take chances and risk the health of your litter. If the pup has caught an infection from his mother there is a possibility the rest of the litter may go down with it. Sorry if I sound like the prophet of doom, that is not my intention....good luck, fingers crossed it is something easily sorted

Swollen eyes can mean the pup has infected eyes and the pus is stuck behind the closed lids -so yes, see the vet.

My philosophy is this: when I think something is wrong with my dogs, I always call the vet.
Some breeders and dog friends I know say I am silly, and that my vet thinks of me as a money machine, but honestly, I would rather get on top of things before I end up not being able to control a mild version of infection because I waited to long.
Take the pups to the vet. Always better safe than sorry.

You're not being silly. if you are unsure, then take the vets opinion. Some more experienced people recognise 'signs' of something, and can deal with it which is fine. but if you are not sure, then you are wise to visit the vet. there are times when people think they know best, and self treat, and by the time the vet is bought in its either to late or causes a huge bill with added suffering to the animal whilst it is being treated incorrectly. Then the expense and long treatment is somehow 'the vets fault'.
Thanks everyone for all the advice mum and pups are all fine only one pup had swollen eye and it opened next day with no infection I checked with vet about ear drops as well and it was fine to use so maybe i was panicking .Its a real nice litter and they have all got homes booked already. Thanks again
