I would suggest that you contact your breed club and get all the info you need on relevent health requirements as a first stop. Your girl is far to young to breed with at the moment, Breeding any dog is not something that you should enter lightly and should only be attempted when you have a good knowledge of the breed, and if you think that your girl is an excellent example of the breed. Cost is a major factor, its not just the stud fee, you have all the related costs when the bitch is pregenant and the cost of rearing a healthy, happy and well balanced litter.

Your bitch will need DNA testing for prcd-PRA & Familial Nephropathy which cost $290 plus the cost of shipping by FedEx(in the region of £50 +) & the bloods being drawn by your vet

Then hip scored for Hip Dysplasia(around £150 plus) & clinically eye tested as well for Hereditary Cataract(which cannot be done until she is two years old)(£27 I think)

If you breed her without doing all these tests you leave yourself open to civil proceedings if she produces a puppy with any of these genetic conditions

The breed is not currently on the schedule for Hereditary Cataract - annual eye testing is recommended however from 12 months old (for GPRA, CPRA) and also testing for Glaucoma.

FN testing on UK dogs cannot be carried out by Optigen under the terms of their licence unless that dog has been previously DNA tested for PRA prior to December 2006. Antagene in France have the licence in Europe for the FN test but will process samples and send to Optigen for PRA testing if both tests are required.

Ahh what a shame that Optigen won't do the test.  I was hoping to have bloods done on all my dogs in March with their being the clinic held then.  Looks like that's off then.  Such a shame as I think that they have DNA test for hypothyroidism in our breed.  I was really wanting to do this!

Optigen will do the PRA tests for your Portuguese Why do you think they won't ? the Clinic is in Feb & the details are on the Optigen site or you can PM me for the e mail address
