What do those of you with outdoor pets do in this blummin horrible time of year?

At the moment I've got no worries about outdoorsies - my only outside pets are my goldfish, and I'm pretty sure they're fine - well, they've lived through half a dozen so far with no problems :p

But come next year, I'll have a large outdoor aviary with two rabbits and half a dozen birds in it - cockatiels, kakarikis and budgies.  In future possibly some chickens, quails and finches too (the latter two in a separate aviary in case anyone questions the sanity of hookbills and finches kept together :p).

But now I'm worried about how to sort them out.  In theory I could squeeze the rabbits in indoors - somehow - but what about the birds?  I seem to be living in firework street, the people over the road are having a display at the moment and upsetting my lot.  Remy's squished under my desk in a t-shirt, and Soli's barking at the big bangs and making him worse - and my immediate neighbours are having a display tomorrow. :(  That'll be a laugh.  The rats have got the light on and their own stereo, though they don't seem bothered by the bangs.  They're shut in just in case (they normally have half the spare room at night).  But how would I deal with birds??  They're kept indoors at the moment, albeit in a thin-walled boat, so I've no idea how they'd cope with very nearby fireworks.

ARG I hate these bleeper-bleeping things!

I don't know what to suggest about birds and fireworks...I just wanted to ask about the birds in a boat??? :D

lol!  My friend lives with her family on a boat is all, nothing bizarre really :D

My neighbours have an aviary with a variety of birds outside and they have no problem at all with the birds and fireworks.  They do keep the lights on in the sheltered inside part but apart from that thats it.

So far all birds have been ok and they've had it for about 10 years.

My Dad had an outdoor aviary for many years and I don't recall his budgies ever showing signs of being bothered by fireworks.

I am glad you answered that one Nikita as I was wondering how you got a boat indoors :D

It's funny isn't it, birds are such sensitive creatures I mean you can move some to a different house and they are so stressed they die, yet they can stand fireworks.  But shoot a gun and they fly?

I'd expect them all to drop dead with fear, but from those who have avaries, chickens etc, it seems they dont, infact animals all round seem to know when to just sit quietand when to run/fly, not seen any foxes tonight at all either.

We have 2 Cockatiels inside called Seb and Pika, they sqwark for us to OPEN the curtains so they can watch any firework displays round our area! :rolleyes: Truely nutty birds are our Cocktiels, theyre big crests are always up and into something as well! :d :D

Our dog loves fireworks as well, so they all sit at the window watching them together with the curtains pulled back! :p

Guess were quite lucky really! :d

Have you always shown excitment when fireworks were on, if so that is probably why your animals are excited by them too.

With Mitz we did show great excitement at fireworks when she was young and now she loves them too much! :d :d

about 4 years ago our idiot "just moved from the town" neighbours (half mile up lane) had a big firework display and our dairy cows stampeded and a number were killed. we were furious and told them how irresponsible considering the cows were overnighting oin the field next to their garden.....if they had only told us (common courtesy i would have thought) then they could have been kept in or put on another part of the farm. My horse hates fireworks and is a sweating quivvering wreck when he sees them over the far side of the moor.....6 miles away!!!

That must have been horrendous to find them like that the next morning Sam :(

Hope from now on they did tell you.

after they saw the carnage they caused they have never had another fireworks display!!!
