I went to London last weekend and visited Harrods. I was really surprised to see they that they had puppies for sale in the store. They looked like border terriers but there was no information up to see. They had lots of space and looked healthy but I didn't realise pet departments still sold puppies and kittens I thought that practice had long gone.

Sadly not there are lots of pups sold retail including through kennels that have a boarding license and buy in pups to sell.

I think that only the sale of pups in the street or in street markets is not allowed.  Pet shops do have to have a License.

Yes I was surprised too, I was listening to the radio, they were interviewing a girl pop group. One of the girls had a very young pug puppy with her. When asked about it she said she'd popped into Harrods on the way to the interview and couldn't resist buying her :( Worse was when she followed that up by saying "I don't know what I'm going to do with her when we're on tour - do they let you take dogs into hotels?"

I was furious, stupid girl hadn't thought past the first 5 minutes for that puppy, poor little thing :(

OMG, you would have thought that such a high profile store wouldn't be so irresponsible!

And the pop group concerned being interviewed on the radio was heard by my fourteen year old daughter who told me, ooh I want a pug that evening.  I told her in no uncertain terms, when and if she was responsible enough to own a dog, when she lived alone and had the resource to buy and care for a dog only then should she consider getting one, never on a whim.  How irresponsible, I didn't hear the interview but obviously made an impact on her and I wonder how many others?

They've improved; when I was a little girl they used to have lion cubs and monkeys and suchlike available for sale. That only stopped when the Dangerous Wild Animals Act required licences and strict conditions for keeping these animals.

I work in a petshop, and get asked at least once a week if we sell puppies or kittens!! I find it so annoying, how can people even think of buying one like this, not seeing its mum or knowing anything about its background.....
