I have 2 Sibes
my elsest girl sleeps in her crate with bedding and shes fine with that but my youngest rips up her bedding no matter what it is ( iv been through the lot and spent a small fortune )
I was just wondering if its alright for her to sleep with no bedding?
She seems fine with none at the moment but im just worried about her being on a hard surace all night?
I know it might sound silly but could she develop sores?
she is only crated over night with the door shut
Any advice will be much appreciated
Thanks
My dog is not crated anymore (only when she was a pup) an doften choses to sleep on a hard tiled floor than her nice comfy bed. So I doubt it'd do any harm.
Can you not just leave the ripped up bedding in there for her though, maybe she likes it like that?! (Assuing the ripping isn't stress response?!)
If you don't like her sleeping on the crate floor you could buy some rubber matting to put down. Like the stuff used at ringcraft. It's worth a try.
honeslty ive tried everything from rubber floor mats to vet bedding to sheets, EVERYTHING
I cant leave the ripped bedding in because shes a pooch hoover and eats it :rolleyes:

ooohhh a tough one.... if it were me I would try a 'magic carpet' thype of bedding, have you tried any of the bitter bite sprays? I havent used them myself so not sure what they are like...
its a difficult one as i dont know what i would do.... nothing worse than a chewer... have you tried leaving her out of crate or having crate in your room?
Ive tried the sprays and it seems to attract her
lol!
As for the crate door open i dont want to do this yet as her crating is helping with the house training.
And neither of the dogs get to sleep in my room, their crates are in the kitchen
I think im just going have let her sleep with no bedding but keep checking her over, make sure shes not getting any sores ( if that can happen )

Got the exact same problem. Litterally. My two oldest (4 years and 15 years old) are fine with bedding. They dont rip it, chew it whatever.
Then there is my one who is just over a year. I cant put anything in her crate, as she eats it. I too have spent a small fortune on bedding for her, and no matter what I put in, its ripped within a half hour.
I dont put anything in her crate now, and she doesnt have sores or anything. I am using a Travel Kennel (like those airline approved ones) and she is totally happy with that.
At night, she sleeps in my bed, and doesnt chew my bedding on the bed. Only things in her crate she chews.
Have yet to solve her problem of chewing, but I would rather prevent it then try to solve it which could cost a lot of money. Also, bedding can come off in strings, which could get caught in their intestines and cause problems. So she has nothing in her bed, but a chewy.
Thanks everyone for your replies
just want to add its definitly not stress related
She's used to her crate now, shes been using if since day one, I think its just her being her! lol

Same here I've got an 18mth old bedding chewer :D I just leave her with the ripped vet bedding these days- she doesn't have any sores or anything- I just look at it like the equivalent of her fluffing her pillow........nahh who am I trying to kid- she's a pain in the rear :-) I tried the sprays, different bedding etc to no avail- she still has to rip it.

What about popping a kong in with her so she has something she CAN chew, to give her bed a break?
You can actually get beds made out of kevlar, the stuff they use in bullet proof vests! I think the website is www.stop-chew.co.uk
Does she do it as soon as she's put in? Or is it after a while?

How about shredded newspaper (if she isn't a white dog!). She can't really rip it up much more and it can give a nice soft bedding. Either that or straw - which is actually really warm when they make a den.
Hope this helps

Take the plastic base out of the crate and place the crate
on top of the vet-bed (or similar)
This offers warmth and comfort but makes it trickier (but not impossible!) for a dog to chew.
The newspaper is a good idea but shes a black and white bitch, so by morning she would be a nice shade of grey lol!
she has plenty of chew toys to keep her occupied, i'll have a go at placing the vet bed underneath the bottom and see how that goes for tonight

I think some one has said you can get chip shop paper which is newspaper without the printing. I think I remember you can get it from cash and carry???
It's the price of puppyhood I'm afraid, Winter is coming, well it's here! :-D So the weather will get colder and colder she needs something warm.
I used to buy one of those flat dog beds with a duvet inside and a waterproof washable outer covering, pups very rarely are able to rip them, I then would buy a few cheap fleece blankets which are nice and warm and turn up the ends to make it a comfy circle, never had either ripped up, other types of dog beds most pups enjoy devouring I'm afraid. :-P
The reason im so reluctant to buy another a big comfy warm bed for her is that 1) i dont want to waste more money just for her to rip it as she did the last one i got her and 2) Huskies have a very high telerance to low temperatures so a need for her to be warm as such is not important.
The winter months may bother most breeds but certainly not Sibes :) :)
if anyting they love it!
She much prefers lying on cold slate floor tiles than a warm carpet
I'll also try the non ink newspaper and see how that works out
may as well try everything I havent already!
Well, you know your breed best. :-D I'm shiverig at the thought of newspaper only during the winter especially for a pup, I know Huskey pups are fluffy though aren't they so I guess you are right, other breeds don't get their warm full coats straight away. I hope that you find a solution for the little monkey. :-)

My oldest bitch wouldn't even use a bed but slept on the lino on the concrete floor for the first two years or m9ore. I do use Vet bed for teh dogs and most of them prefer to scrunch it up under theri heads rather than use it for warmth, but I do live down south in a city so it is never that cold. there is no heating in the keennel they sleep in at night but when the doorts are closed it never is less than 10'C in there.

If she's in a crate, can you do what someone else (sorry! can't remember who! :o ) said and put the wire base of the crate directly on top of the vetbed - then if you cover the crate with a blanket it'll be snug and draught-free.
If your dog's a cussed little so-and-so who actually wants a cold, draughty bed, that won't help at all!
jeangenie I think you might be right
I think the little madam just wants a cold bed lol :D :D :D

Hi, I have two husky girls and the eldest has never liked to sleep with bedding in her crate, even when she was just a couple of months old, she has always preferred the cold metal crate floor. Perversely though, she loves to snuggle down on her vet bed near the radiator and in the she summer sunbathes. But then she is a contrary madam. :D T'other madam just likes her comfort rather than a cold floor.

Welcome to the world of naughty huskeys! My girl has done this a few times, we discovered that sh didnt like the texture of certain materials, hit and miss later, we have an intact bed! My friend also has a husky puppy and hers did the same, and she has now found one that he doesnt rip up. It was mentioned to me something about the material felling funny on the fur between their feet, how true this is I dont know, but as your probably already aware, Huskies are notoriously picky and notoriously destructive, we have lost skirting boards, door frames, anything on kitchen surfaces, her bowls, anything, I promise they do eventually grow out of it! You just have to be strict and patient! Personally I would NOT put her in a crate without a bed or some kind of lining, as a few friends have had to do this to their dogs and it has caused hair loss and a slight skin rash on their elbows. Also, I have a slate tiled floor in my kitchen, Sisqo lays on it when she is too hot and them goes to her bed when she has cooled down. Hope that helps

Hi
Does the pup choose to go into the crate without any bedding of her own free will during the day when the door is left open? If so, I guess she's happy! In which case, either just keep an eye open for any pressure points/sores or (to keep YOU happy!! :-) ) what about putting a layer of shavings or straw in the tray? Alternatively, you can get some sort of bedding that I think they use for cavies that may work.......it looks like white shredded paper, but is disinfected etc etc etc. May work out expensive though!
Good luck!
well im guessing she's pretty happy ecause i NEVER force her into her crate, she goes in there for a bit of peace and quiet ( ive got a 16 month old son, lol wish i had a crate i could crawl into to when i want a bit of peace! )
Just want to say thanks so everyone else who has offered advice, its all been fantastic so thanks :)

My Mals hate bedding in their crates.
I bought them all matching duvets and they just shove them up at the end and never lie on them LOL

Oops! Was not intending to suggest you would force the pup into her crate - was just wondering if she elected to go in of her own volition or if you had to may be throw a biscuit or a kong in. No offence intended.
lol Jan
no offence taken, i just wanted to emphasis the 'never' part of my response
lol
