Topic Dog Boards / General / Springers and Cavaliers?

Hi, I'm new here.

Just wanted to know what people think of having Springers and Cavvies in the same household? We've got 4 (a lot of the time 5 - my Mams) cavvies and the hubby has always loved ESS - was wondering what this mix would be like?
Thanks in advance,
Sue

I used to have a Springer. When I moved in with my boyfriend he had a Cavalier. The 2 became inseparable! Both bitches, by the way. There was about 18 months between them , though they were both adults when we got together. I can't see a major problem, especially as they are both Spaniel breeds.

Don't know about Springers but Cavs can cope with most breeds. My daughter has a Pyrenean Mnt Dog and the Cavs will if they deem necessary'put it in its place

My cavvies like everything except Westies (sorry Westie owners! I don't know why). We have 3 boys and a girl.

Both are lovely friendly breeds of dog so should get along just fine. Of course both from the same dog group also which is good they have plenty in common. ;-) Springers, (if from good breeders) are dog and people friendly there shouldn't be any problems especially if you raise one yourself.

Only difference will be the amount of exercise needed by a Springer it will definetly need more exercise and run rings around the Cav's, as puppies they are pretty hyperactive, so as long as you make sure that your Cav's have segregation time from an over excitable pup, as Springer pups are not for the faint hearted, they need much more stimulation than a Cav.

They do grow up to be lovely dogs, I also know many people with Cav's and Working Cockers together though, that may also be an option for hubby, they are in looks closer to a Springer but not quite so hyperactive, of course there is also the Show Cocker which would be more on par with your Cav exercise and stimulation wise.

So have a good look at the breeders of Springers, Working Cockers and Show Cockers if you are after a slightly larger dog (I know many hubbies are embarrassed walking a small dog :-D ) they will all go fine with your Cav or you could always get another Cav. :-P

My Cavs get on very well with the Springers they meet in the park and the ones I groom. I agree the Cavs might need a bit of time out, specially when the Springer is young and bouncy, and perhaps a bit clumsy about who it's jumping at! Don't forget American cockers as well as the English ones, they are hard to find but a beautiful breed. Or Welsh springers perhaps, a bit smaller and (at least the ones I know) calmer than the ESS. :-)

My favourite spaniel breed is the Welsh Springer.  As you say not as frenetic as the English, adn also have smaller less heavy ears that are not so prone to being dragged in the dirt and muck so smell sweeter.
