After ages deliberating, and a few occasions of being skint, I've finally changed my name :)

No longer will I be called Delia/Daphne/Delilah/Della/Deliah (OOh I hate that one!)/Oh, as in "Smith"?/<insert incorrect 'D' here - no, now I am as per my username, Nikita :)

I was going to do it tomorrow, but for some reason Halloween seemed a good day to do it! :D :D

So now life really gets fun.  Delia, as I know her, is overweight, lazy, somewhat apathetic and has a rather bad temper with her dogs (shouting only btw, no physical punishments, but the dogs don't like it) - I intend to leave her behind.  I've changed enough already in the last few years to do it, and in the last couple of weeks things really seem to be getting on track as far as diet and organisation goes (the two worst things).

All I have to do now is wait for my certificates - I've ordered one and three copies, so I can send it off to more than one company at once should I need to, and still have a couple safe at home just in case Royal Mail throws another wobbly.  Started ringing everyone on my huge list to sort out - done Sky, just going to ring college then off to the bank.. and that's just the start! :D

Very pretty name!  We had a beautiful puppy by that name, but then again we've probably used most names.

Happy Halloween Nikita!

I always think of you as Nikita even though I knew your "other" name.

New name, new beginnings - congratulations :)

Lovely name very exotic!

How did you do it?

Nikita is a lovely name. :-)

Questions............... How did your mum take the news? Will she and your family call you Delia or Nikita?

Will your friends call you Delia or Nikita?

Or will you just be Nikita to anyone you meet from now on?

I'm only being nosy as I had a friend who changed his name, but all family and long term friends just found it too difficult to remember to call him his new name, me included. :-) His mother was mortified and point blank refused to ever use it, she saw it as a complete insult.

In the end he had two names his original for those that had known him for too long and his new name for everyone he was in contact with afterwards. He did change his name to something really erm..........uncommon and it did not suit him so I guess that is why in this case it did not work.

I think a few years later he changed it back again.

It is funny how names conjour up certain images, if Nikita makes you feel good and you really hated your other name then good on you, at least Nikita is a pretty name and conjours up strength when I think of it. :-)

Answers... :) Mum unfortunately died in 2002, she did pick my name which is why I'm keeping Delia as a middle name.  Dad I've not told yet... I'm putting it off for a while!  I mentioned a few years back that I didn't like Delia and would like to change it, and he wasn't exactly enthusiastic!  Got a bit miffed and was saying that mum chose it, no respect for her and so on.  That couldn't be further from the truth - she's in my thoughts most of the time, and I couldn't ditch it altogether simply because she chose it, but I know he'll still get annoyed.  My stepmum will be fine with it I think though!  My Nan probably not so much, but she's so mellow and quite the mischevious woman these days that I think she'll get over it quicker than Dad.

My friends are calling me Niki, my friend from Kent has been all summer, as have the people she works with and her family!  Whether my family will I don't know.  My sister knows, but she never calls me anything except sis half the time :p Not told my brother yet - he'll wait till I've told Dad, because I know he'll let slip otherwise.  No point telling my uncle because he'll never remember, and he's not the sharpest tool in the box :p  When I do tell Dad and co I'll leave it up to them what they want to call me.  Don't want to rock the boat any more than needs be!

Anyone I meet now - and people I work with - will know me as Nik/Niki or Nikita.

And thank you, it means the same thing to me.  In Russia it means "unconquered people" - I like that, I'm a fiercely independant person so it fits.  Delia just reminds me of 14 years of wrongs names and teasing at school!  I even had a friend who started singing "Dedelia" at me when Suggs' song Cecelia came out

Hi Congrats on changing your name. I like it:cool:

Did you change by deed poll or Statutory declaration?

I changed my surname by Stat declar years ok but the Solicitor then said for a first name you could call yourself whatever you liked without having to do it legally.

Your family will come around.  My nan was very shocked but came around in the end.  My dad (who effectively had kicked me out the family circle and home  at 15, he married a right old control freak witch after my Mum died when I was 14) was furious and could not understand why I had done it and took it as a personal affront

Good on you, you only have one life!

The only change I had was it took me a while to get used to be called by the new name I kept looking around to see who it was!

I did it by deed poll online, just waiting for the certificates now (extra copies just in case!).

I know it could've just adopted the name, but to get things like driving license and passport changed requires documentary evidence that I'm using the name full time.  And I wanted a decisive event to mark it, if that makes sense - no friends around to have a party with so I had to go deed poll :D

congratulations. I have thought about changing my name before as I wanted a new start but decided to keep it as I thought my parents wouldn't like it. I however didn't have any bad association with the name. I think the name is v nice and I think your mum would be proud of you and keeping Delia as your middle name is a nice thought.

Best of luck with telling your dad.

Congratulations Nikita! I did know you were called Delia before but always thought of you as Nikita anyway.
