Topic Dog Boards / General / What are these breeds?
- By Crespin Date 30.10.07 19:18 UTC
Ok, I have been reading posts for a while now, and have noticed a lot of different breeds named, that I have NEVER heard of.  Ok, I may not know a lot of different dog breeds, but huh?
Miniature Cocker Spaniel.......what is that?  Is it a undersized Cocker, or maybe a spaniel that looks like a cocker, that is smaller, but not actually a cocker?  The only cockers I know of are the American Cocker and the English Cocker.

There are also other breeds on her, listed, that like to use the word Miniature.  Does miniature just mean Smaller than - named breed?  It may sound stupid, but as I said, I have never heard of a miniature cocker, miniature springer, miniature bulldog, mini yorkie, mini pug, etc..... so what are they?

(BTW, I do own a miniature pinscher, but they are no way smaller versions of the Dobe or German Pinscher.....so is this kinda what is meant by these terms?

Just a ploy I think to sell smaller than breed standard pups:mad: Edited to add there are recognised minature breeds such as min pin but the kc does not recognise minature cocker spaniels etc

If it's on this site I think you will note that people on here have advised anybody querying such "breeds" that there's no such thing!

I saw a Yorkie while I was driving home last night. Didn't look baby puppyish, but I swear I've seen much bigger guinea pigs, really didn't look like a dog at all.

I'd be afraid I'd sit on it or tread on it.

hi i would not say you could get miniture cockers or springers but you can get miniture yorkshire terriers cant you,you see that advertised alot.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 31.10.07 09:47 UTC
No, there''s no such breed as a 'miniature yorkie' even though people advertise undersized examples this way.

Some people erronously also assume there must a a minature version of the Yorkshire Terrier when in fact they want a correct sized one rather than the cair and Westie ones often seen about.

The standard call for:
Size
Weight up to 3.2 kgs (7 lbs).

another feature often very incorrect is colour which shoudl be:
Colour
Dark steel blue (not silver blue), extending from occiput to root of tail, never mingled with fawn, bronze or dark hairs. Hair on chest rich, bright tan. All tan hair darker at the roots than in middle, shading to still lighter at tips.

The ears should also be errect, not floppy as I see fairly often around here.

It's just a gimmick, another word often used is "teacup" - teacup chihuahuas and yorkies are often advertised.  To my mind at least, it translates as "runt" - and if it's a whole litter of teacups, then I tend to translate it as "runts bred from runts" which is in no way a good thing - these dogs are small enough, the smaller they get the more risk in breeding them, as I understand it.

I just wanted to make sure, as so many people are advertising these mixed breeds, or runts, as something totally different.
You wouldnt believe what people are selling GoldenDoodles for (Golden Retriever crossed with Poodle), and sometimes in the newspaper adverts you will see them saying they are PUREBRED.  They go for 800 CAD.
But since this is a Forum based overseas (meaning not in Canada) then I just wanted to make sure, as some of the terms are different, and I am just getting used to figuring them out.
Thanks a bunch all!

The following breeds are recognised in the UK and are officially listed as 'miniature':

miniature bull terrier
miniature long haired dachshund
miniature pinscher
miniature poodle
miniature schnauzer
miniature smooth haired dachshund
miniature wire haired dachshund

Anything else, is a selling ploy.

Welcome to the forum :)

Oh, I'd believe it!  I was speaking to the owner of a "cockerpoo" a while back - a very well bred one to be fair, she waited 10 months for the pup and the parents were fully health tested.  She paid £700 for that little dog - no idea what that is in Canadian dollars, in US it'd be around $1300, maybe a little closer to $1400.  It's insane.

I'm a dobe obsessive and for a show quality pup I'd expect maybe £800 - more like £5-600 for non-show though.  I paid £400 for my boy, who is appaulingly bred - I wouldn't contemplate paying that for a mongrel! (Well, I wouldn't pay that for him if he was being advertised now)

From another post, apparently pounds to CAD is roughly 2.2 CAD to the pound.  (we dont have the pound dollar sign on Canadian Keyboards lol)
I cant even think of paying that much for a mutt.  When I was younger (grade 3) my mom got a Springer, who was rather cheap, but she is still purebred, just hunting lines instead of show lines.  I think that in itself makes a big difference, working compaired to show dogs.
I usually pay around the thousand dollars for my breed. CAD and USD are almost the same (but at this time the CAD is higher than the USD by like 2 cents lol)
Thanks for all your replies, I just didnt want to offend anyone talking about a Mini this or that, when I have my own views on those advertised Mini when their breed name doesnt actually say Miniature in it.  (Or those who say they have King breeds too.  But dont get me started on that!)

I'm guessing you mean you wouldn't pay that for a different dog of similar breeding. ;)
