My sibe has been on her first heat the past few weeks... And when i bath her i noticed her vaginal area was pinkish. But when she led down near me,  i noticed it has turned purple ??????? Any ideas, Is this normal???.... :( Thanks

Sounds normal to me, if there is any smelly discharge she may have an infection, but if it is just a colour change I dont see a problem:cool:

I dont mean to preach and I will try not to!! When a bitch is in season you have to be so careful, your girl is very young and to have an unexpected litter at that age would be so horrible for her. She is still a baby and I assume that she has not had any of the health screening your breed club may recommend. Dont get me wrong, accidents do happen but it is clear that this coulld have been avoided by just keeping them apart. Semen passes from the dog in the first few seconds so even a quick slip mating could result in an unplanned litter. I will get off my soap box now. Good luck, I hope all goes well.

Errrrrrr, usually when the vulva goes a dark colour for my dogs that's usually a sign that they are pregnant!!!  Hopefully if he was only 4 months old he won't sire anything but I believe that it has been known for a dog of 5 months to!!

 poop, thanks for the help. I have kept them apart since she started on her heat, but i couldnt keep them apart at the time they tried. Best off going to the vets. Thanks again... Ill let you know how i get on

When was he with her?
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 27.10.07 07:19 UTC
Don't want to worry you, but my M-I-L's dog sired a litter at only 4 months old :( They thought he was too young, but the bitch wasn't allowed out, and he was the only male she was near.

He was with her around 4/6 days ago ...... Well i have been told that too. That he wont be able to but i have always kept them apart just incase.... My pup is 1yr and 3 months old. She was abit late with her first heat. Making a vets appointment now.....

Sorry to be graphic, but if his balls have dropped he can certainly impregnate. :-(

If you need to preserve the bitches fertility your best option may be to wait and have her palpated and scanned about 25 to 28 days from when she might have been mated.  If she turns out to be pregnant she can be given a drug to abort the litter even up to 42 days after whelping.

You have left it too long for the usual post mating jab, which has the side effect of a womb infection more likely.

Im taking her to the vets tommorrow.. So will let you all know.. Shes abit smelly now, so im thinking its an infection.

If it is an infection you should waste no time getting her to the Vet.

An Open Pyometra does not make them quite as ill as a closed one Pyometra can be fatal and cause damage from the toxins to major organs.

A close eye shoudlb e kept on bitches that have recently ahd a season for such signs, as Pyometra most often manifests around 6 weeks after a season started, but can happen at any time.

At a recent seminar I attended a veterinary expert in canine reproduction said that the new jab being given for mis-mating is the same one that is given for the treatment of pyometra, and therefore will not cause the infection problems that happened with the old one.

Yep maybe I put it badly I meant the old one was prone to increasing the risk of Pyo.
