Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / HELP! Litter and Kennel Cough

I have a 9 month puppy with Kennel Cough, (not been to any shows or in kennels) and is on AB's.
My worry now is I have a litter of puppies nearly 5 weeks old, who are also on AB's as well as their mother, who has no signs of kennel cough (YET!) But a couple of the pups have started sneezing and I've just heard one cough.

What chance do these pups have and how long does it take to clear this horrible infection up.
This is the first time i've had this in many many years of owning dogs.
Can anyone give me some advice please.

Many Thanks Lynn

A few years ago I purchased a pup who I subsequently found out had kennel cough (he started sneezing rather than coughing a couple of days after I picked him up). He wasn't particularly badly affected but passed it on to my other 2 dogs, one of whom ended up on ABs for well over a month! When I spoke to the breeder to advise her my pup had got it and maybe she should contact the other puppy buyers, she said "Oh I thought he might, a few of my others have it" and very little else - some people!

Can't really offer any advice, but I hope they get over it quickly.

Hi Lynn

I do hope all goes well for you but I remember my neiughbours dog having KC and I had a very young pup at home at the time.  I spoke to my vet who reassurred me that should my pup show any signs to get him on the AB as soon as possible which would help so therefore if your pups are now on the AB then I expect they are getting the best option for them. I wish you lots of luck with this Lynn and sure other members will offer some sound advice.

Regards

A friend of mine who lived pretty isolated and didn't go to shows when she had pups got kennel cough at her house when she had pups that age.

The main problem was that they felt miserable and lost their appetites so were not eating and gaining as much as they would have.

They were given AB's prophylactically and cough medicine, and they soon caught up after shaking off the worst of it in a week or so.

They didn't go to their new homes until all signs were gone and they were fit and well, which in the event was only a week or so longer than usual, and their owners were happy to wait until the Vet had passed them fit to leave.

Remember to use probiotics for the pups to replace the gut flora killed by the AB's to avoid digestive upsets.  A spoonful of Bio yogurt on each of their meals will be soothing too.

Many thanks Barbara, I'm so worried about them, although they are eating really well and weigh about 2lb over what they should weigh, its a big litter 11, and the biggest is over 10lb and the smallest is over 6lb so hopefully this will give them a better chance, they don't seem miserable all playing and lots of rough and tumble with each other.
Off to the shop now for bio yogurt.
