Hi ,have a cavalier king charles spaniel she is nearly a year old. She is very small compared to all the other cavaliers i have met and some people even ask if i feed her.She eats well and is very active. What age will she be fully grown as i thought by now she might have plumped up a little and to be honest am getting a bit worried as everyone i seem to meet who has a cavalier seems to think she is far too small.( vet says she is ok on last checkup)
thanks

How big is she? Having groomed for a while, I've seen many, many oversized pet-bred cavaliers which were quite a bit bigger than their show-bred counterparts. The majority of those were also overweight sadly, and I wonder if people are so used to that that they find normal sized dogs too small and skinny. That's purely conjecture on my part though.
Hi
not too good at measuring but to her highest point on her shoulders she is 10 inches and her length (without tail )is about the same .Having met pups younger than her that are twice the width and a good head taller than her was thinking maybe she needs to fill out a bit just wondered when if any age they reach full growth

I agree with Nikita, there are many pet bred cavs that are
huge, one I groom is a fraction smaller than a springer spaniel, and weighs a ton. I looked after a cavalier for my friend for about a year, and she was small. Not too small for her breed (she does well in the show ring) But compared to a lot of pet cavaliers she'd be considered tiny! People used to ask me if she was a puppy when she was about 2-3 years old! She's bodied up now (her owner tells me a little to much especially since having a litter :D) but was a skinny wee thing for a long time! It was very hard to get any weight on her! Her mum now tells me her little son is just the same! As long as your bitch is healthy and is eating well don't worry, she'll body up in time. :) :)

The breed standard says about size:
"Weight: 5.4-8.2 kgs (12-18 lbs). A small, well balanced dog well within these weights desirable."

My dogs don't mature until around 2 years, so as long as she is fit and healthy I wouldn't worry at all, she will mature in her own time :)
Thanks everyone , all though her weight is slightly under that stated (she is very active) i feel a lot better . I did have a read about the cavs, but after meeting quite a lot of others the doubt did start to set in,especially when theirs where sometimes twice the size , but the same age or younger. But she is happy and healthy and now i feel at ease knowing that she is not too small but just what she should be (well almost lol )THANKS . But will take great pride in telling the next cavalier owner who ask me "why is she so small, are you sure you feed her" that she is nearly at cavalier standard.
Thankyou again

Cavahush what do you feed her?
She is on iams puppy and has chicken too

My friends cavalier dog always looked very small and almost on the thin side. He is just coming up three years old and you can physically see him maturing. His chest has started to expand and he now looks a much stockier dog and putting on more body but she isn't feeding him any more than before and it isn't weight that he is putting on.

My Joedee has always looked small against other Cavaliers even in the show ring:rolleyes: however is he in fact 7 kgs in weight & spot on for wight within the breed standard & he's very very well muscled. When he had to go to the vets with a anal gland problem, the young Australian vet was expecting an overweight lump & instead met our wiry Joedee. She did say that he was a really fit dog & even had good second thigh muscles, something she had never seen in a cavalier before. He's now 7 & is MVD free & still chases the collies. He does have a doggy head in proportion to his body
I'm sure that your vet will be more than pleased, so many Cav's are fat little puddings. :-D Yes, we have a breed standard for all dogs, but the truth is nowadays I very rarely see many breeds to standard, they are either huge or tiny, if she is healthy and happy that is fine. :-)
