Topic Dog Boards / General / husky or mal cross greyhound
- By dai dogs [gb] Date 19.10.07 20:22 UTC
hi everyone. im new to this site i would just like to ask if anyone has had or know anyone who owns a husky cross greyhound or a mal cross greyhound. what the temperement. trainabillity ect.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 19.10.07 20:41 UTC
There would be little point in anyone telling you about the temperament of such a cross as any others could/would have a completely different one! Malamutes are family orientated, greedy, individual, pulling, digging, noisey, gorgeous animals. Huskies are beautiful, escape artists, running machine, not quite so people orientated and as for greyhounds ..well, no, never had anything to do with them but they seem like very friendly dogs. So a cross between any/all of those breeds can throw up anything.

At a wild guess I'd imagine prey drive in such a cross would be a major point to consider - greyhounds have an extremely high prey drive as a rule, and I'm pretty sure huskies and mals do to - I can only imagine wat a combination of those two would produce!  I'd guess that recall would be an issue as well, for the same reason.

"I'd guess that recall would be an issue as well" Absolutely agree with you Nikita. If you were to cross a husky, mal or greyhound it should be with a more trainable, biddable dog in my opinion (assuming we're talking about wanting one as a family pet of course). A cross between an independent breed, bred to run from your voice, and a sighthound could be a real handful!

The question I would like to ask Dai, why would you want to cross these breeds? There are so many pedigree breeds to suit all tastes and needs in the world without filling our rescue centre's with cross breed experiments that went wrong? What do you want this cross breed for, for a family pet or some other working purpose?

GG, you're assumng the OP wants to cross these breeds? Perhaos they've seen one in a rescue kennels and are considering adopting it? Hence they're not sure if its Mal or Husky x grey...of course if that is the case then they won't know exactly what the breeds are - they may not be any of these?

Of course they may have a greyhound bitch and be considering mating it to one of these dogs - but I'd hope not :D

the reason i was thinking about this cross is for working purpose . speed, stamina, good feet, good coat, natural preditor, the down side i can think off is trainability.

All 3 breeds are good workers in their own field.  Can't see why you would want the prey drive in the sled dogs really but they do have high prey drive because of being primitive breeds,a nd who knows maybe that is some of what makes them pull well????

With a Husky you have a dog developed to haul light loads long distances, with Mals heavy loads, and Greyhounds are used for racing, but developed to course, being able to turn this way and that at speed, not something a sled dog needs to do.

As for coat, you would be removing the good coat by crossing with a Greyhound.

What is the working purpose you're looking at?  That will make a great deal of difference when looking at breed types, whether they are crosses or pure-breds.

Remember a lot of the purebred working types are very versatile and can be trained in a wide range of disciplines.

the only purpose I could really see from these types of crosses would be combining the speed of a greyound with the stamina of the Sibe and Mal

But even then you cant be sure what you would get with a cross

Looks like every second mongrel to me :D :D

IMO a husky or mal cross would be too heavy for the type of work i think you want it for?

just to add to Melodysks description of breed temprements. Greyhounds are people loving, laid back, comfort loving dogs. They will of course chase given half a chance but other than that are real couch potatoes.

I would hope not too!! I have adopted many rescue dogs in the past and all too often have witnessed many "experiment cross breeds" put to sleep as temprements have not turned out as first thought, even in two very social pedigree parents! Get on my high horse at times when people talk of issues like this, sorry if any offence was caused, that was not the intention.
